June 26, 1972..... 21 yr old Roberto Duran challenges Scotlands best ever fighter, the excellent LWT champion Ken Buchanan. Duran was all over Ken from the start, scoring a flash KD in the opening seconds, it was all uphill for Ken from there on, Ken had his moments mid way thru the fight with some neat boxing but Duran, with his swarming style was racking up the points, landing the harder punches & plenty more of them. Rd 13 was contraversial, both men get into an exchange after the bell & Ken is punched in the balls, he should have been given 5 mins to get his breath back but it was stopped & arguably the best ever LWT started his reign, Duran was awarded a 13th rd TKO - which would clearly have been a 15 rd UD anyway so fairs fair. Every legend has a beginning & this was Duran`s.... 37 yrs ago today. :smoke
Oh, I thought you meant THE FIGHTER was born 37 years ago. I'm thinking, who's 37 now? Well, Vitali Klitschko I guess. Anyway, I agree. Duran vs Buchanan was definately a legendary meeting.
Great fighter beats great champion in great fight to win his first world title. That's the way it should be.
Still one of the best performances put in by a great fighter. By the way you know you are going to get GPater on here telling you that in his opinion Benny Lynch is the greatest Scottish fighter, just to let you know in advance.
