Sammy Gutierrez vs. Carlos Ruben Dario Diaz, 12 rounds @ light flyweight (IBF title eliminator)

 

Round 1

Gutierrez puts his head down and bangs away, knocking Diaz back a few steps. Wild shots traded both ways, with lots of leaning together and pushing apart the only breaks in the action. Gutierrez is swinging just as wildly but a bit harder and more often.

Round 2

Gutierrez is coming forward, throwing hard but severely telegraphed right hands high up into the air and left hooks to the body. Diaz is boxing nicely out of the southpaw stance, landing right jabs and left crosses into the face of Gutierrez before switching back to orthodox. The rat-tailed Argentine is actually getting into a very nice rhythm now, disrupting Gutierrez's attacks and peppering him with short counter taps to the face. Gutierrez goes for some hooks to the body, but can't spin fast enough to keep up with Diaz.

Round 3

Duaz is still playing matador and landing some nice counter hooks on Guty. Balls, will, and adrenaline are all that is fueling Gutierrez's forward motion now. Why he keeps coming forward is anyone's guess. Diaz is ripping him with counters to the face. BIG UPPERCUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gutierrez walked right into it with his face down, so that he took the shot basically full in the grill as if it was a straight right. Now Guty comes on and backs Diaz to the ropes with some heavy body blows!!!!!! The crowd gets into it!! Not enough to steal the round.

Round 4

Diaz is threading out his left jab and circling around Gutierrez, dodging uppercuts and body shots by staying out wide. Diaz is making himself very difficult to hit cleanly, and is landing jabs and uppercuts while moving around Gutierrez. Nice lead right by Diaz, followed by a few jabs to the mouth. Gutierrez leaps in with a sidearm hook to the body. Gutierrez is just rushing forward, oblivious to the counters that Diaz is bouncing off his face. Diaz is pushed back as they land jabs together. The Mexicans in attendance are getting antsy, looking for a turnaround and starting to erupt whenever Gutierrez goes to the body. Diaz keeps slipping out of the way before Gutierrez can string too many of those body shots together.
