Great fight. You highlight that Gomez came back after getting dropped and kept himself in the fight. You also point out it was a great performance by both fighters. These points can get overlooked. Gomez showed enormous heart and will. Hindsight might tell us different (Sanchez's durability etc) but given his power it wasn't impossible that he might land a fight changing punch. Sure, we know now that Sanchez was a brick wall but right at that moment Gomez potentially kept himself in it. At Junior Feather particularly he would never be out of a fight as long as he was still standing. This is a great little action fight and I've watched it many many times.
Salvador Sanchez proved his greatness, never saw Eusebio Pedroza fight someone as dangerous as Wilfredo Bazooka Gomez and win. He was knocked out by Alfonso Zamora in 2 rounds. Sanchez did have a more durable chin, his opponents were well known also. Not a Joe somebody from Timbuck Too to pad up his record of title defenses. Also Salvador did not have to fight dirty to win.
To be fair Pedroza was a novice fighting at bantamweight at that point. Zamora was just 12 months away from going to war with Zarate in the battle of boxing greatest punchers. Pedroza lost his next fight by stoppage as well to an average fighter. Once he committed to 126 he came on in leaps and bounds.
Had no idea what fight this was referring to before opening the thread. There were a lot of good fights in ‘81.
I thought it was an awesome year too. It was a sad year though, too, seeing Norton, Ali, and Frazier in the ring at that point.
I think he will be more than happy with the general premise. My post was being compiled before his second post and wasn't there as i posted mine.
What you are saying is correct, but look at the level of his title defenses at 126, he did not fight the Danny Little Red Lopez's or the Wilfredo Bazooka Gomez's or even the Azumah Nelson's, even with 15 pro fights.
THE THREAD IS NOT ABOUT HIM.ABOUT AUGUST 21, 1981 SANCHEZ&GOMEZ. NOBODY ELSE. 1 FIGHT. NOT THE CAREER.
