“I’m willing to fight any of these top guys, just give me fair notice and a reasonable offer”, exclaimed Simms. “I know Kelly Pavlik is on the comeback trail, so if he wants to get it on I’ll take the next plane to Youngstown. I am ready to prove to the world that age 39, I haven’t lost a step. All I need is an opportunity.” There would be pros and cons to using Simms to tune up for a possible December playdate with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. On the plus side, Kelly would be keeping himself fit and at or near fighting weight, and would be almost guaranteed to get some precious rounds in against the crafty veteran spoiler to avoid the build-up of ring rust by year's end. Simms as a tune-up is no worse an opponent than some of the "contenders" against whom Pavlik defended his middleweight title. As an added bonus, if Pavlik manages to stop the equally cerebral and durable brother of Travis, he'll have made a bold statement despite the fact that Tarvis is pushing 40. On the downside, shining against Simms can be difficult - he made vaunted puncher Allan Green look absolutely horrible despite being Green eking out the decision. The slight risk of an unexpected upset could also be extremely damaging to Pavlik's attempts to rebuild his career. What do we make of this?
Just someone looking for a payday that won't be accommodated. I keep trying to tell you guys, I don't think Pavlik is looking for easy, low paying fights because the training is just as arduous and career shortening as for a high profile/money fight. I think they have a number of fights left in mind and will maximize them. One loss and people are thinking he gets back in line behind John Duddy FFS.
You keep harping on this. That's just as true for anybody else as it is for Pavlik. Why is he so special that he doesn't even need to consider anything but high seven figure checks for his troubles? He's not back in line behind John Duddy, but he is coming off a loss and has looked like crap for a while. He also, as I said, fought worse guys than Simms during his title reign. And he's had TWO losses, not one.
Nobody said high 7's. I think he can easily still pull half a mill though. He's not going to get that on the under card of FNF's. But this isn't my decision to make. I'm just giving my opinion on what I think WON'T happen. Besides, any tune up before a December date would have to happen mighty damned quick.
Junior isn't going to agree to fight Pavlik, no way no how, not even this version. It would be suicide the way Junior fights. He would get obliterated.
I do not think the rumours about Chavez jr are true. I just read an interview with Roach, and he pretty much admitted Junior isn't ready. As far as Tarvis Simms, everybody and their cousin claimed they'd go to Youngstown and fight KP in his back yard at some point. It's just talk.
Give me a break. If he's good enough to fight Gary Lockett or Miguel Espino, he's good enough to fight Tarvis Simms FFS. He doesn't need to choose Tarvis, but it would help his credibility if his 'comeback' fight is against a credible opponent.
I look for him to choose a meaningful opponent for more money. Well, at least more money. I'm only guessing like everyone else here. Locket, and in a sense, Espino were both mandatories. Kelly's history is that when he has a true choice on who to fight doesn't 'settle'. It has led to a couple of losses, true, but he doesn't shy away from the challenge. Of course we are now in uncharted waters. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that he will want to make a statement in his next fight that he is not washed up and still considers himself to be one of the best. I've already explained why he will take big fights only IF they are available to him. He may reset his thinking, but I don't think he will unless his next fight is a loss also. Again, these are just my guesses on what the thinking is in his camp. But then again, I would not have suspected that he was going to stay at 160 either. Probably his best move IF he can do it safely.
Unlike the rest, though, he's at a point where he literally has nothing left to lose and may as well go for it. He'd probably agree to 80-20 or whatever Pavlik dictated (again, purses are a side of the business where my ignorance is greater than my curiosity) just for the chance to be on TV.
Other than Chavez or Duddy or guys who are too tough for a comeback fight, there isn't anyone out there that makes him more money than anyone else. But on the other hand, Chavez and Duddy aren't credible opponents.
