I remember it well. I was 19. Got up in the middle of the night to get the result on Ceefax and the headline on the sports page, 301, said that Lloyd had done it. I think the fight was on tv on the Sunday afternoon. Simpler times maybe but boxing was so much bigger then.

 

Speaking of Ceefax, I’ll never forget the morning my mum woke me up and told me “Tyson’s been knocked out.” No Sky in our house back then, so I ran straight to page 381.

I sat there in disbelief — no way this is real, they must have it wrong. And then, sure enough, the headline scrolled up: “Don King tries to overturn result.”

Moments like that stick forever. Simpler times maybe, but as you said boxing felt so much bigger then.

Here’s hoping James DeGale can turn back the clock tonight — and not go out like Gavin.

 

Overrated win simply because Curry was grossly overrated up until that point.
