In Thomas Hauser's," Boxing Is" .The opening story is about an old Sugar Ray leading to him training to fight Paul Pender. One of his sparring partners was a 20 years old DonTurner, whom some here respect and like as a trainer. I thought they might be interested in this tid bit recounted by Turner. They sparred in 1960. "The man was 39 years old.First sparring partner gets in the ring.Robinson knocks him down in the first round, and hurts him bad enough that he cant go on.Second sparring partner gets in the ring,Robinson knocks him down in the first round and hurts him bad enough that he can't go on. Now it's my turn,I'd had two pro fights, and they want me to spar three rounds. I was a little nervous, but I was getting paid. And to be in the ring with the great Sugar Ray Robinson.Wow! First round ,he hit me with a left hook that knocked my head gear off, clear out of the ring.I don't know if I'd strapped in on wrong or what. But I figured, better the head gear than my head.I lasted the three rounds but it wasn't easy."
Great info. Always good to learn info about "The Greats" plus the young guys who were working their way up.
Given "The Greatest's" non stop activity for twenty or so years (monthly [or weekly for pete's sake]) this amazes me! Given virtually no footage of his Welter dominance; many see him only as the latter 50's middle 'monster' after his best days were behind him. NO modern day boxer, or any boxer for that matter, could have accomplished what he did over three decades. In closing, something to consider: Most ATG's go 'out on their shield' at the VERY end. King Sugar simply got out pointed in his last fight. At 44?? I'm thru rambling, just look at the record.
