This was already into the 6th round when I tuned in (having overlapped with the excellent WBC Silver flyweight title clash between Edgar Sosa and Wliberth Uicab) but it looks like a BARNBURNER. Toe to toe slug fest, with Rios driving Sanchez to the ropes with repeated uppercuts but getting tagged back the whole time by the tall mullet-sporting Vampire from Puerto Rico.
Round 7 Rios is hitting that body, coming forward a bit recklessly and getting countered in the head as Sanchez leans back against the ropes and gazes down to comfortably take aim at him. Rios uses some elbow on the inside, positioning himself to land a big right uppercut. Sanchez keeps him tied up and backs out toward the corner pumping his southpaw jab. Rios dives in against him and batters the body with big lefts and rights. Sanchez is getting away with whatever he wants to the head of Rios, but Ronny couldn't care less...hard at work and oblivious to the hailstorm of light punches upon his skull.
Eighth and final round coming up. The crowd is on pins and needles, mostly staring in rapturous silence but for one small but very vocal pocket of mostly young ladies screeching "GO RONNY!! C'MON RONNY!!! KNOCKEMOUT RONNY!"
Round 8 They've finally slowed down a bit now. After the 6th and 7th that's certainly forgivable - although something tells me those two rounds were only a continuation of the same all throughout the first five. Rios is shimmying side to side, practicing and posing his cute boxing stance, and darting in to peck the body with jabs. Sanchez isn't in a hurry to force the fight into overdrive again, content to hang back and paw with his right jab as Rios basically takes the round off. Ronny's cheering section sputters down to a resigned relative hush...clearly not happy about this unspoken gentleman's agreement to go easy for the last few minutes.
Uh, was doing Sosa vs. Uicab. As good as this looked, that was better. Sorry. WBC Silver flyweight title > random not terribly important 8 rounder.
Sanchez aint no really Bori chico. He dont have that boricua power we all poses so I know he aint one of us.
Official cards: Rochin 80-72 Jenkin 80-72 Caiz 79-73 UD winner...and STILL undefeated...Ronny Rios! :bbb
This isn't even the best opponent Rios has faced as a pro (that would be Speedy Gonzalez, by far - ignore the official cards; I had that a draw) but based on the last few rounds and the fact that he was knackered by the 8th, Ronny had to really hustle and put in some hard work for this win. Maybe his second toughest battle to date behind Gonzalez.
Uh, it wasn't. At all. Not every fight a good prospect is involved in is important. This was stay busy fare, nothing more. Sanchez had lost three straight, and won two of his last eight. GTFO with your bull****. :yep Sosa vs. Uicab was FAR more important, and was more exciting in rounds 10-12 than this was in round 6-8. Seriously, just stop. I don't even know wtf kind of point you think you're arguing here, but you've lost. :hi:
