I'm not a boxer but the hardest for me would be the left hook to the body...it isn't the mechanics of the punch at all...It is being in a position to not get hit with a counter right hand to the head. The trouble lies in being able to shift your weight from the front front to the back foot and the placement of your right hand, if you overcompensate by putting it to far in front of your face, then you are open to a left hook...

One thing I noticed in the gym was that most new to the gym liked to throw the hook but weren't as good at it as they thought they were. Sure, fun to throw it at a bag or a person who isn't going to make you pay for leaving yourself open after throwing it. Most guys would be off balance after throwing it, completely out of position, and open for counters... they also had far less power on it than they expected. Seems easy but it's not.

Some guys do it right from the git-go, d, but lookin' into that canon, you can take a helluva pounding before you learn it.

Very true. It is easy to fall all over yourself, and not even have anyone touch you.

took years to get my hook decent... uppercuts are a different story. and left uppercut (southpaw) is ridiculously hard to throw for me.

The left hook to the head. For some reason it is my worst punch. I'm an orthodox fighter but even the right hook is more natural and better than my left hook. My 1-2-3 is ok, and I can hook off of the jab, but for whatever reason I can't throw a good lead left hook to the head to save my butt. My left hook to the body is pretty good.

Lead uppercut with the trailing hand. Cokes, Marquez and Charles all perfected this punch, but really, there are plenty of world class proffessional fighters that can't do it properly.

I think there are some punches which I would label as "special", like the lead uppercut...its just not a punch very many fighters throw, and not necessarily one that is important to have in an arsenal. It helps to have any punch work for you but I think the hardest thing to master is probably the straight right. Because its the hand farthest from your opponent and it is SO easy to telegraph...mastering the timing, quickness and sneakiness which makes that punch able to land effectively takes a lot of practice.

The left hook. I had a natural right cross that was heavy and sudden and would for years set it up with a hook that was thrown to get the head in range of the right. There's alot of mechanics in the left hook and it's tough to teach too... though I got a couple of tricks that accelerate it.

Instead of throwin' the hook text book, B. Try it like SRR, almost an uppercut. Bet it's less awkward 'n has more leverage immediately.

I'm not quick enough to throw it that way, I'll get nailed with a right hand as I throw it, then another one after I throw it. I've improved my lead left hook where I can throw it effectively without turning it over, but I am still not able to throw it as a lead punch and turn it over properly.

Try feinting the jab, dipping slightly and stepping in with your head turned slightly to the right, your right hand open in front of your left cheek as you rip a short left hook. All done more or less simultaneously.

That way, your in position and defended and if you land the lead hook, it's short; and your in position to dip and come in with a right uppercut to the body, dip again and come back with another hook to the head then angle out.
