Stopping Maldonado would make a statement. Only four men have done it before in 46 pro bouts, and three of them were elites. (and the other a sub-elite world titlist)

 

American debut for Ivan Morales.

 

Round 1

Morales circles and fires a hard right jab. Maldonado hustles to his left, trying to spin the headstrong young southpaw out of position and get him to leave an opening. Maldonado goes to the body, landing some meaty shots but getting countered as Morales lines up the left hand behind his jab. Nice exchanges toe to toe. Fun opener.

Round 2

Morales is circling and forking out his right jab as Maldonado ducks in and swipes the body with both hands. Short hooks to the cheek by Morales catching Maldonado on the way out. Very tactical match here, with some stretches of real violence. BIG hooking exchange, and Maldonado is hurt to the body, quickly backing up and gulping for air while wincing. He comes straight at Morales a moment later, looping big lefts and rights in to the body while hunkered down low. Maldonado is actually driving Morales back nearly to the ropes. BIG right hooks by Morales, to head and body!! Maldonado keeps coming as Morales tries to hold his ground but is forced to back away!

Round 3

Morales lands a chopping 1-2 as Maldonado fishes for body shots. Their heads clash and Morales is cut by the right eye. Morales seems to be discouraged by that, backing up and hugging the ropes as Maldonado comes in with big uppercuts to the body. Maldonado is actually turned southpaw, floating a right jab and throwing big left uppercuts downstairs. Morales is looking hurt to the body!! He's grimacing and shaking every time Maldonado spanks him with a left, even if partially caught on the bottom of his elbow!

Round 4

Maldonado is keeping up the body attack, and Morales looks nervous as he tucks up and circles to his right on the outside. Reaching right hand by Maldonado catches the youngster below the youngster below the ear. Morales tries to tame Maldonado with the jab but isn't having much success. Maldonado has him on the backfoot and is DRILLING the body with straight lefts out of that southpaw crouch, which seems to be really confusing Morales. HARD left hand leads springing up out of the crouch by Maldonado. Morales circles to his left, very shy. Maldonado stalks, coming in very low, almost ducking below the top of Morales' trunks. Morales looks scared shitless.
