I thought of that sparring session before reading your post. The other guy was an absolute dick imo. That in itself should not have been allowed. Moving down from Ali-Holmes, it’s difficult for me to watch Leonard - Camacho. You don’t have to be a fan of a fighter in particular to be saddened by the loss of his once great skills. Like Superman(men) being stripped of his powers. I also literally can’t deal with that - lol.
Ali could have fought at least until Tyson. That would have been a great changing of the guard fight. And you know what? I would have given Ali a chance to take Mike into deep waters and drown him!
Ali was sparring with Tim Witherspoon sometime in '86 but Tim is a good man and wouldn't throw hard head shots and mainly worked the body. Regarding the Holmes fight, Sylvester Stallone was in the audience and said, "It was like watching a live autopsy." Post Berbick, Ali may have been one fight away from a real tragedy (Mike Weaver, Gerry Cooney?).
We live in an imperfect world. Better to acknowledge that and proceed from there. A lot of people picked Ali. Vocal. We all knew at least one of them in 1980.
