Jorge Maysonet Jr. vs. Gabriel Tolmajyan, 8 rounds @ lightweight

 

Teddy Atlas reminisces about when he coached against Jorge Maysonet Sr. in 1989, whom his charge Simon Brown beat via TKO3 in what he claims to have been the first ever boxing match between outsiders behind the iron curtain.

 

Round 1

Maysonet throws WIDE hooks with both hands, from behind the back, pushing Tolmajyan across the ring. Tolmajyan waits, slouched over to one side, rolling his head to slip shots. Counter right jabs by Tolmajyan. Looping left by Tolmajyan, following a headbutt. Maysonet is hurt, and given a standing eight count after what may have been a glove brushing the canvas. He claims it was a reaction to the headbutt, yet the ref isn't buying it. Tolmajyan stays close and jabs as Maysonet keeps winging out hooks past him.

Round 2

Long right hand dropped in by Maysonet. Tolmajyan circles to his right, taking short cross-over slide-steps and hunkering down with his right arm swinging. Counter 1-2 by Tolmajyan over a lazy right hand lead from Maysonet, connecting bang on the face. Maysonet flicks out fully extended but flaccid left jab from outside. Tolmajyan dances crescents around him and pauses to punctuate each with a right up-jab on the taller Puerto Rican. NICE counter left uppercut by the Armenian, moving in past a Maysonet jab.

Round 3

Tolmajyan is driving his lead right foot inside and keeping his lead arm vertical from elbow to fist against his face in a narrow mobile shield as he works in behind the jab and screes out Maysonet's. Head clash. Maysonet complains. Tolmajyan is bounding in up on his toes, faking Maysonet out and showing that southpaw jab. Hard left by Tolmajyan as Maysonet navigates his back off the ropes.
