Maidana was gonna win that fight eventually but that was an early stoppage somewhat....

 

Thanks a lot. Early stoppage, but Maidana did well. He's improving his jab and upper body movement. Just like I thought he would keep doing. He showed signs of this in the Morales fight, and it's clear his relationship with his new trainer is going well. That first 1-2 that caused the knockdown was textbook.

 

If you guys are just seeing that for the first time you shouldn't really comment on it being an early stoppage.

Petrov had spent the previous three rounds holding on for dear life in between getting badly rocked (and dropped in the first on a glove-touch KD, with a couple more afterward that weren't even called).

It was an "enough is enough" stoppage.

Yeah, Petrov bolted upright during the middle of the ten count. The referee clearly was thinking "Wait, what am I doing? Screw the count. This kid is getting raped".

Petrov had nothing to offer, hadn't come close to winning a round and was barely surviving. Add to that hitting the deck twice in a round and looking shaken (even if he was still clear eyed and able to stand up on his own) and it was a pretty clear choice for the official.

I have't seen the fight but seeing that Petrov went down twice offficially in the round. I also saw his glove touch but it wasn't called. The stoppage seems reasonable.

 

Maidana looking better I must say

 

He is looking more cohesive, less one-dimensional. However, against the tide, I also thought there were two or three occasions (one very clear one) where Petrov caught him to the body and hurt or made him step back. Given Khan's success there and also Morales sunk one or two in that seemed to register that seems to be the key to slowing down or containing Maidana.

 

Looks like he's been working on defense and on working his way in with the jab. Kind of hard to tell how much he's actually improved with such an overmatched opponent. I'm not holding my breath though, crude brawlers like Maidana generally don't improve much... and even if they do show some marginal improvement, something usually happens; a loss, a change of trainer, and they regress.

The only reason Khan won the fight with Maidana is because of Cortez any other ref in their he would have lost, hope Maidana beats him if they fight again and I think he will.
