My thoughts exactly. It was a quick call that didn't change the outcome one iota.

Looks like they've been working on Maidana's footwork a bit... he still keeps he legs two wide apart a lot of times when he's coming forward, but at least he has better balance and is better planted to throw punches while pursuing a fighter. When he gets excited and goes in for the KO though he reverts back and is not using his feet as well.

His upper body movement and defense also looks to be better.

Of course, it can be hard to say if it's truly better or just looks that way against a lesser class of fighter.

If I was his management I would have him sparing nothing but very fast or technical fighters. He can outpunch the guys who will stand with him, he has to do better with speedy guys and crafty, technically sound boxers.

I had said before Maidana had been making very small but fruitful improvements in his technical ability and so many scoffed.

WELL BEHOLD BITCHES. El Chino jabs and slips.

Maidana looked good, jabbing his way in and showing some nice movement. However he still freaks out and smothers his own work when he has a guy hurt, and he was still getting hit far too much for my liking.

That being said he rapes McCloskey in December (if the fight gets made).

McCloskey has better much surviving instincts than Petrov IMO and should last longer, but it will be only a matter of time.

Petrov was game. It was stopped quick. Nonetheless, Maidana looks good and it's good to hear him calling out Morales for December.

So the shoe is on the other foot now. Will Morales be ready for the rematch by year's end?

    I didn't see the first 3 rounds.

Maidana stepped back everytime he was hit to the body by Petrov. Anytime Petrov threw more than a jab Maidana had to reset. The knockdown was a straight right over a lazy jab where Petrov was standing straight up, chin untucked. left himself wide open. Poor defense.

Petrov was moving Maidana back everytime he hit him with a body shot, yet gave up ground on lazy jabs as the only punch.

To beat Maidana. Come fit. Put your punches together, with a sustained attack on the body. Guard against the right hand counter. Protect the center of the ring, and move Maidana backwards.

 Yeah, but will Maidana's subtle improvements hold up against better opposition? That still remains to be seen.
