#5 Vitali Klitschko Vitali Klitschko has an iron chin. He has never been knocked down in 43 boxing matches and he has been in the ring with strong punchers such as Lennox Lewis, Corrie Sanders, Chris Arrerola and Shannon Briggs. Klitschko was rarely hurt by their best punches. Klitshcko can give any heavyweight in the world a tough night because of his size, intelligence, and chin. He is an intelligent fighter that knows how to use his size to his advantage. He has a sneaky right hand and tremendous left hook. He wears his opponents down with his strong punches. He can be an intimidating opponent at 6 feet 7 inches tall and 255 pounds. #4 James Toney James Toney has a strong and durable chin. He has only been knocked down a few times throughout his career. He has fought in 78 boxing matches. Equally important, the 42- year-old Toney has not lost his punch resistance. Toney has fought many of the best fighters of his generation such as Mike McCallum, Michael Nunn, Roy Jones Jr., and Evander Holyfield. He has good subtle defense. Yet, he is not afraid to brawl. Toney is a very intelligent boxer. He loves fighting. "I love to fight, I was born to fight" said James Toney. #3 Antonio Margarito Only a few boxers could take the punishment that Antonio Margarito took against Manny Pacquiao. Margarito ended the fight with a fractured right orbital bone and he had to have surgery. Margarito is a relentless fighter that keeps coming forward to pressure his opponent. He wears his opponents down, then unleashes his offense. His lack of defense leaves him open to take hard punches from his opponents. Margarito's toughness and determination keeps him from quitting in the ring, even when a fight seems unwinnable. Margarito said after the Manny Pacquiao fight "I am Mexican, I would rather die then quit." #2 Shane Mosley Shane Mosley is known for his impressive speed and punching power. Mosley with his exceptional chin has rarely been knocked down or hurt. Mosley was knocked down by Vernon Forrest in their first fight. However, he immediately got up after the knockdown. Mosley has been in the ring with some of the hardest hitters in the sport such as Ricardo Mayorga, Oscar De La Hoya, Antonio Margarito, and Fernando Vargas. Many boxers lose some of their punch resistance when they get older. But, the 39 year old Mosley still has a good chin. He is an aggressive boxer that does not back down regardless of who he is fighting. #1 David Tua David Tua is not the best heavyweight boxer of his generation. However, there are only a few boxers that can give and take punishment like Tua. He did not get knocked down in a fight until his 51st boxing match. Tua was knocked down in the 12th round against Monte Barrett. Tua had a thrilling brawl against Ike Ibeabuchi in 1997. But, his iron jaw stood up to Ibeabuchi's strong and brutal punches. "Ike never hurt David, and he caught him with some really big shots," said trainer Ronnie Shields. Tua's big strong neck can absorb punches. He is confident enough in his chin that he does not need head gear in training. "I don't want to wear it" said David Tua. "Tua would get hit with big shots that just didn't seem to hurt him. I never saw him stunned or hurt" said Ronnie Shields. These are the boxers with the best chins in boxing. They can take punches and give punches. It is essential for a boxer to have a strong chin, because in boxing a fight could be ended with just one punch.
Get Toney and Margarito off there. Toney was put down by a Jab from Sam Peter and Margarito was brutally and embarrassingly KOed by Mosley. There are other fighters currently who have not been knocked down or out.
atsch Toney being the former middle-weight James Toney? And you're complaining that he got put down at heavyweight by one of the biggest raw punches in the division? I don't remember the incident and whether it was a jab, but so what? Clottey got put down by a jab and he has an iron chin aswell. Toney has never been stopped from 160 to heavyweight which is a testament not only of his defensive skills but of his chin aswell. And Margarito, as much as I don't like him, he's proven his chin time and again. Look at the Pacquiao fight, absolute iron. Yes he got stopped by Mosley - because he let the biggest puncher in the division tee-off on him and he was taking crunching left-hooks all the time and Mosley was bouncing the biggest right-hands off his head all-night and Margarito was smiling. Margarito's defence lead to him getting stopped because he let Mosley land flush power punches in combinations, and he didn't roll any of them. The fact that he took as many huge punches at the finish as he did with his chin up in the air and not rolling any of them if anything proved his chin moreso. If you insist on being a chin-checker, at least be a good one. The fact that you don't know enough about boxing to discuss a wide-range of subjects and are therefore forced to discuss only punch-resistance is bad enough, let alone the fact you can't even do the latter well.
Iron Chinned fighters don't get brutally and embarrassingly KOed period. IT IS WHY THEY HAVE IRON CHINS!! Do you understand that? Those punches from Mosley would not have done **** to someone like Jake LaMotta (Yes, I realize they are different weight classes it is just an example) look at the 22 punch combination LaMotta took from SRR. I have been watching Boxing more years than you have been alive, I talk with people in Boxing all the time. Margarito has a good Chin no doubt but it is not one of the elite in the sport because if it was he would not have been knocked out by Mosley. :hi: EDIT: and Peter has the most overrated power of any fighter I have ever seen the guy has not KOed ANYONE that was worth a ****. Legit punchers can KO the elite opposition or upper echelon opposition they fight.
Holyfield still deserves a mention, so does Penalosa and so does Johnson. They all proved there chins in the past and are still going at their old age and taking punches and not getting stopped or hurt.
Mikkel Kessler should be there. Never been down in 43 pro fights including 11 straight worldchampionship fights or 16 if counting international titles as well. Not many fighters can claim that.
Chins like LaMotta's, Chuvalo's and LaPorte's don't come around all the time. You can't rank everybodies chin on the basis of that. LaMotta was also under-rated defensively and rolled a lot of punches well. Knockouts happen in boxing, even iron-chinned fighters like Margarito get knocked out occasionally when they take a sustained 9 round beating from the biggest puncher in there division and don't roll any punches what so ever. You are basically saying that there aren't any huge punchers in the sport on that basis. It's like saying Duran wasn't iron-chinned because he got knocked out brutally by Hearns. So you're basically dismissing Hearns power. Hell, you're dismissing Foreman's power, Shaver's power, Louis' power because you're saying that if a fighter ever gets knocked out, they aren't iron-chinned. I guess Foreman and Louis knocked out a bunch of glass-jawed bums then. atsch
True penalosa can take a shot. Even in his tko loss to lopez he was never down. Just took too much punishment.
wow. youre not very smart are u? a ******ed man can watch boxing for 50 years and he still wont truly understand the nature of the sport. thats what we have here.
Jesus man you can't even grasp this. No wonder. On a sliding scale a LaMotta or Chuvalo would be a "10". Someone like Amir Khan or Roy Jones would be a "1". The guy posted a thread about the top 5 Chins in Boxing. There are SEVERAL other fighters he could have put in the list in place of Margarito and Toney that haven't been brutally KOed or knocked down in their career. And how you get where getting KOed by a Foreman or Shaver's (who is another guy that didn't KO many of the elite fighters he fought) makes you have a Glass Jaw is stupid. You are one of the people on here that refuse to acknowledge that Glass Jaws exist in Boxing. You don't even understand the premise of ranking a Chin in the first place and you are trying to lecture me. I said Margarito had a very good Chin but under strict legit criteria it IS NOT one of the best in Boxing right now. Do you understand this? It is very simple.
