While Lopez-Ayala was a good fight, there were too many that were better: 1. Larry Holmes vs. Earnie Shavers II 2. Matthew Saad Muhammad vs. Marvin Johnson II 3. Alexis Arguello vs. Alfredo Escalera II 4. Marvin Hagler vs. Vito Antuofermo I 5. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Wilfred Benitez
I guess you've never seen them, then. I'll have to say, tho, I'm VERY picky when it comes to flyweights and bantamweights.
I wasn't saying that Lopez-Ayala wasn't a good fight, or even a bad pick for 1979, I just prefer the others.
My personal favourite of all of those is Arguello-Escalera 2 but I don't personally have a problem with Lopez-Ayala being FOTY. Saad-Johnson 2 was a great one too. The others? Not so much.
I personally think 1979 was one of those years that had so many great fights it was real tough to pick one.
I've seen all of those and only Saad Johnson 2 was good enough to have been FOTY, but I don't think it should've been.
I agree. But you probably won't agree with mine. I am forever a proponent of Holmes-Shavers II. No fight that year had a more perfect blend of action, drama, suspense, and art and science. It was absolutely perfect.
