1) Mayweather-Cotto....would be a test for Mayweather as the legit welterweight champion. Cotto is the number 2 guy and a true strong and hard hitting welter. Would be a blockbuster and IMO is the only fight I see doing more numbers than Mayweather-DLH did. Would be huge for the sport. Pick:I favor Mayweather in this fight by late stoppage. Would be a near deadlock going into the sixth, but Mayweathers superior speed, boxing ability, and accuracy would be too much. Cotto has an improving jab but he usually just throws a single jab and Mayweather would counter that til he succumb. 2)Wladmir KlitschkoVERSUSOleg Maskaev/Sam Peter winner.....would settle who is the heavyweight champion is. Klitschko is the uncrowned champion IMO. He has been kayoing top 10 contenders the past 7 years. He is just missing the belts. Maskaev is facing Peter(someone Dr. Ironfist beat already) next year. Pick: Klitschko is the number one regarded heavy for a reason and provided all there strengths and weakness Klitschko could stop both guys if this happens which the heavyweights need. 3)Juan Diaz versus Joel Casamayor......two best lightweights in the world Diaz holds two alphabet titles and Casamayor holds the Ring Lineal title. Casamayor is the gritty veteran and Juan Diaz is the young lion on the herizon. Classic Crossroads fight. Pick: if this happened 2 or 3 years ago I'd be picking Casamayor but his form has been slipping. Diaz is a buzzsaw and two relentless for an older boxer who once depended on boxing skills and speed to win. Diaz although the lighter puncher may be the first to stop the tough Cuban. Depends on what he has left I say Diaz by Unamious Descision. 4)Bernard Hopkins versus Joe Calzaghe....Hopkins the lineal champion and Calzaghe long-time champion at super middleweight. Both future hall of famers and would be icing on both careers.Would be the first real challenge Hopkins has had at light heavyweight. Tarver was ill conditioned(not Hopkins fault), Winky was far too small. Pick: Joe Calzaghe was long underrated and would beat Hopkins convincingly at this date and time. Hopkins of 2007 is less active, throws less punches, and more gritty and cagey. Calzaghe is a southpaw, throws alot of punches, and has the far faster hands and feet. Hopkins was always bothered by speed and footwork. Calzaghe is also a great counterpuncher so Hopkins 1 punch at a time approach wont cut it. Calzaghe by competitive but clear 12 round descision. 5) Manny Pacquiao versus Edwin Valero Would be the first time Pac-Man fought a prime top junior lightweight. This fight also pits the weight classes two hardest punchers together. Would be a classic in eithers home turf since Valero cant fight in the states. Would be an absolute slugfest. Pick: People say Pac-Man has been taking it off the gas lately trying to preserve his career and including more boxing skills. Pac-Man has an ego and would slug at time while outpunching and outspeeding Valero whose technique has gone backwards. Would be a complete war until Valero crumbles in the mid rounds.
mayweather-cotto haye-maccarinelli diaz-katsidis hatton-witter calzaghe-hopkins we know we're getting haye/mac,jmm/pac2,rafa/izzy3,pav/jt2,its gonna be another good year.
Mayweather v Cotto is pretty much the pick of any fight possible for 2008. The only thing that might just surpass it, is a series of heavyweight fights that ends in an undisputed champ. But as for one off fights, nothing compares to Mayweather/Cotto. At least were off to a good start with some fights already signed for.
