TBH I haven't seen much of Mac Foster I only seen his fights vs Ali, Quarry, which probably isn't the best fights to showcase his power. But I didn't really notice any standout punches from Foster, what was his best KO on film where it showcases his power ?
Also, Cleveland Williams deserves to be mentioned as another possible top 5 punchers in Ali's resume. Also, interesting that Ali faced two LHW who are considered among the greatest punchers in boxing history P4P - Bob Foster and Archie Moore (old). Still they probably weren't even among top 10 hardest punchers he fought, let alone top 5
I'm not sure mate. My pick of him was based on his record and what I've read. No question Frazier is in a different stratosphere as a fighter and in terms of opposition beaten, but my guess as to who had the hardest, raw 1 punch power is Foster, who was a pure, out and out puncher, rather than the pressure fighter Frazier who had good power, but was generally more of an accumulation puncher (though he could really whack with the left hook).
Yeah, Cleveland Williams was another I considered. You didn't specify as much in your OP, but I decided to base my picks on the fighters as they were at the time each boxer you listed fought them. Williams was washed up when he fought Ali (the counter argument being power is usually the last thing to go, I suppose), but I'd guess him as having more raw 1-punch power than Lyle & Foster, based on their respective peak versions. Either way, I suspect there's not much in it.
I was going to post my list but seeing this there's no need as you have pretty much nailed it. You may quibble around the edges on a couple of fighters but this is very solid. Kudo's.
@Greg Price99 you know what's funny mate Lewis fought atleast 10 punchers who had very high KO ratios, Mason, Ruddock, Mercer, Tua, Bruno, Tyson, Briggs, Morrison, Tucker, Vitali, and I would say atleast half of these fighters are world class punchers. Not bad for someone with an apparent "weak chin".
Agreed DP and aside from Tucker, I'd say they were all world class, if not all ATG, punchers. Rahman was a world class puncher too, with Vitali (before his shoulder problems/comeback) and McCall not too far away. No question Lennox had decent, if not great, punch resistance.
Yeah people like to claim Rahman was a journeyman but I think he was ranked top 10 fighter for maybe 5 or 6 years ? Had a good win vs the dangerous Corrie Sanders that earnt him his shot at Lewis, and 41 stoppages out of 50 wins is nothing to be sneezed at.
Decent - yes, great - no. It's not like he had Bowe's defense, so most of these guys hadn't ever hit him with their best punches. Ruddock, Morrison, Tyson, Tua, Golota certainly didn't. It shows, however, that he was great all-around fighter with very good defense (except of against the jab).
He definitely wasn't a journeyman. Solid fighter with a good jab and right hand. Not as talented or skilled as Douglas though
Lewis took big punches from Bruno, Briggs, Mercer, Vitali, Holyfield, etc. Unlike Bowe, there's little doubt about the quality of Lennox's punch resistance, which even at elite level, I agree was decent, but not great.
