Anyone know the logic behind 5 minute rounds in MMA ? Compared to boxing it seems MMA uses more oxygen because of the extra activity allowed , wrestling which uses all the bodies major muscle groups and kicking which uses large muscles . From a fan's perspective it would seem that a higher intensity 3 min per round fight would be more likely to see more activity per round . Often the 4 and 5 round are quite slow with both fighters very tired especially in the heavier weight classes. The fight itself would have to be 8 rounds to come close to the present 5 round fight of 5 minutes per round .
In early UFC's it was three minute tournament format with five minute rounds being for the final. When UFC went "legit" it seems this was the format agreed with the US regulators I think.
5 minute rounds in MMA is ok because they use a majority of that on top of each other on the ground resting. Stand up fighting for 5 straight minutes will increase KOs but fighters health and welfare will be in danger.
Zzzz. What a tool! MANY fights in MMA have lasted the 5 mins on the feet or the majority of the 5 mins. People say this like EVERY Boxing match is Ward/Gatti all over. Floyd stands for THIRTY SIX MINUTES and does no damage to anyone.
