Well, I'm not talking about mayweather or canelo in particular. i'm talking about Floyd's opponents.. You say old Mosley, Guerrero (simply NOT in Floyd's class), and Hatton are p4p great wins? Like I said, looks great on paper, but not compared to the big picture. Mayweather, while not at his best, is still incredible enough to beat anyone within his weight class/s. Miles above everyone right now. If Canelo beat him it would elevate him as an all time great in my eyes. Would be a huge win.
exactly, if robert guerrero was his only fight of the year and he decided to fight someone like alexander next then that would be weak but it's a good win, he absolutely embarassed Guerrerro and he was the best WW available. Sandwiched between Cotto and Canelo that's a decent win, on it's own it's nothing special. for the record Guerrero was nowhere near top 10 p4p, later parts of the top 20. good fighter and will be a champ again before retiring. he'd easily beat Rios.
Thats why i have and still respect him so much. gonna be a sad day when he goes. I see nobody that will be able to match him ATG or be a real superstar. only fightera i think have a chance to be great (probably not better then Mayweather) are Canelo,Broner and Rigo. Maybe Gamboa but his lack of defense wont last long for him
The man cuts over 20lbs to weigh in, now he has to do over 22lbs , for one reason- to weaken him You know this I know this Floyd knows this that's why he did it. He also has pointed out in the past , that its not a real victory in doing so. This is what FLOYD has said. I'm just agreeing with the man. Drain em
I said Mosley, Guerrero, and Hatton were ranked in the top 10 P4P by Ring Magazine when Mayweather fought them. That's a fact. You can say Mosley was old, but he was in just about everyone's p4p top 10, he was considered the legitimate champ, and a lot of people were saying that was a fight Mayweather needed to take. Martinez is 38 now. Are you going to tell me that wouldn't be a good win for someone like Golovkin? Mayweather has been fighting nothing but top rated comp for a while now. Somehow though, people act like he hasn't been fighting anyone.
That doesn't automatically make them great wins. You have to look at the big picture and see where they were at in their careers. Guerrero was clearly outclassed and should have never even fought Floyd tbh. Huge difference between Berto and Floyd. He was old, I felt he was really showing his age in that fight. It didn't help that he was fighting Mayweather, who would have given him problems at any stage in his career. Martinez has clearly slowed down quite a bit so it wouldn't surprise me if Glovokin beat him. I think we can agree that he missed the ideal window on fighting Cotto and Mosley (maybe not Floyd's fault though) and he should have fought Williams, Cintron and maybe Margarito.
Its crazy people still dont see that ALL these guys they wanted Floyd to fight were Top Rank fighters who got over-hyped by beating other Top Rank fighters for the most part. Floyd fought Cotto 1 fight removed from his TR deal at a weight Cotto was undefeated at for a belt. And for anyone saying the whole "Didnt fight who we wanted him to fight" we all wanted him to fight Pacquiao so anyone else would technically fall into that category. Everyone wanted to see Floyd v Hatton Everyone wanted to see Floyd vs Oscar He fought JMM to show dominance over a guy Pac's arguably lost to not yet knowing how difficult it would be to get a Pac fight off. So who was the 2nd person we wanted to see him fight if pac wasnt an option? ( in no order) Mosley -Fought Cotto -Fought Ortiz -Fought Canelo -Fighting Martinez -Doubtful due to weight difference Bradley -Could potentially fight if he leaves TR and/or destroys JMM Margo -but after the brick fiasco he was off the table too Khan -Kept losing or getting in ugly fights and not performing well etc Gurrero - Some people swore the guy would win lol Williams - I forgot about him, but that fight never looked like it would materialize with floyd pursuing bigger paydays and him moving up in weight Only people I wish Floyd fought but didnt Kosta Tszyu instead of Gatti Pacquiao instead of Ortiz
The problem really is, Floyd's just a level above. He fights these guys people say he won't fight, then they discredit the guys after he beats them.
How anybody could think Margarito had a chance against Floyd defies reason. The reason the fight did not happen was because of the enmity Bob Arum and Top Rank have for Floyd. He could have fought Cotto earlier but Arum and Top Rank would not make the fight. It only happened after Cotto left Top Rank. Mosley had destroyed the cheating Margarito in his last fight before Floyd beat him. Mosley was hardly shot against Margarito a match up I predict Mosley would win proudly.
There are lots of beatable guys that are often included on p4p lists, like a formerly great fighter who's seen better days, average/slightly above average guys who were able to put together a couple of decent but not great wins, average/slightly above average guys who beat a formerly great fighter (like when segura stopped calderon), and guys who are riding on hype (Broner).
Floyd always fights at the MGM; the backyard thing is a stretch. No way Floyd goes to Europe for this and no one thought he should have. Hatton was undefeated, like 52 -0 and called Floyd out. Many analysts thought he could beat Floyd AND Floyd was accused of dodging Hatton for quite some time. Mosley was coming off a devastating domination of one of the most "feared" welterweights in the division. He was looking like he was back and again, many analysts picked him to win the fight. Coming off the Margarito fight, there was very little talk of him being faded or past prime. That talk began after he fought Floyd. Another fighter who had been calling Floyd out and had he not fought him, Floyd would have been accused of avoiding him. So damned if you do damned if you don't I guess? Guerrero is also the "next guy" that everyone has been talking about at welterweight after his thorough domination of Andre Berto. Alvarez has been BEGGING for this fight. People suggested that Floyd would not fight him. "Fighting him before he's prime" that's lame. Alvarez has been trying for the longest to make his name off of Floyd and there's not many other legacy building options for him out there. The kid is in his physical prime, if not his boxing one. And again, he begged for this fight. Do you see the trend? You suggest that Floyd didn't fight "everyone who wanted him to fight". Well, who DOESN'T want to fight Floyd? He is the key to significance in the sport and the biggest payday. I'd say Floyd took on MOST comers though not all, and the same cannot be said for many fighters. ----------- I don't like the Alvarez catchweight thing but Pacquiao, who most compare to Floyd, fought pretty much everyone with conditions. - Hatton (came off a knockout loss to Floyd, and a very shaky performance against Jennings. Pacquiao was a comeback fight for him) - Mosley (at this point WAS looking faded and past his prime. Thoroughly dominated by Mayweather and looked very bad against Sergio Mora) - Margarito (drained him and as customary, fought him after he got his brains beat in by Shane Mosley) - Cotto (Fought him after his devastating loss to Margarito and his uninspired performance which he actually should have lost to Joshua Clottey. People thought Cotto was finished at this point. Perfect time for Roach and crew. + drained him AT WELTERWEIGHT. Under the guise that Pacquiao is "not a natural welterweight") - De La Hoya (Freddy Roach argued that De La Hoya was finished after having trained him to a loss against Floyd, and then witnessing his subsequent suspect performance against Steve Forbes. Also, weight drained him. The guy needed fluids injected into him he was so dehydrated.) Theme, things can be said about a whole lot of fighters and the "conditions" surrounding their fights. Bottom line, Floyd has handled business with whoever has stepped in the ring across from him and to his credit has always fought mentally confident opponents at high moments in their careers. Can't take that away from the man.
