If Calzaghe got to 50 and 0 would he be perceived as a boxing immortal ? Would Sports/Boxing fans be talking about Joe in 30 or 40 years time if he retired 50 and 0. As an amateur he won 3 ABA titles at different weights. Has held all the major belts at one time or another, held the WBO version for 21 defences and 11 years. Been awarded an MBE by the Queen. Won the prestigious BBC sports personality of the year award. I am interested to know how do you think he will be perceived in years to come if he retired 50 and 0. I dont want to know what you personally think of Joe Calzaghe but how do you think Sports/Boxing fans in general will perceive him in years to come ? Rocky Marciano is the reason i am asking for your opinions, he is seen as a Boxing legend, casual Sports fans have heard of him, yet he only won the title against 5 different men, most of them at the end of their career, a lot of people think Rocky would have lost some of the fights if he had fought them in their prime, yet he is perceived as a legend, they even made a hollywood film about him.
it's not about how many wins you have, it's about WHO you beat, and i say this his fan not some calzaghe hater...
I'd rank him clearly above Marciano due to Marcianos failure to win the BBCs Sports Personality of the Year and the lack of a MBE of The Rocks resume.
Who cares about numbers. Valuev was 46-0. Hell, Mario Veit was something like 40-0. Like someone mentioned above, it's about who you beat and how you do it. You want Calzaghe to be immortal / top 10 ever with 50-0 ? Let him beat now Jones, Dawson, Glen Johnson, Steve Cunnigham and Hopkins clearly. Then I'll gladly call him immortal / top 10 ever. But it won't happen. If he retires after Jones, he will be remembered as great, but definitely not immortal.
