    Folks,

Okay, here we go... Ezzard Charles is coming off his 1950 decision win over Joe Louis and Floyd Patterson has just regained his title from 1960 Ingemar Johansson by wicked left hook KO... In a time machine, who takes this fight?

Both Ezzard and Floyd are using 8 oz. Everlast gloves and boxing in a good size 20 X 20 boxing ring with the 3 knockdown rule in effect...

Charles is roughly age 29, while Patterson is age 25...

Charles tips in at 184 pounds and Patterson is 190....

Who is the winner once the smoke has cleared?:huh

That would be an awesome fight. Great matchup. And very close. I think Charles is the more complete fighter and he knew how to deal with speed thus I pick him in a close one. But you can´t count out Floyd, he did not only have speed but although good technique and good pop, so he may knock Charles out or down three times.

I think stylewise Charles would give Patterson fits. Charles liked you to fight balls to the wall so he could get opportunities to counter and Patterson would oblige. I think Charles straighter punches and all round better skillset would edge it for him. Patterson lead with too many hooks and he would get smothered and countered a lot. Charles decision.

Either man could pull this off..... I really don't picture a KO within 15 rds, but whoever gets off better would capture the decision...

Charles by a close decision..but a kd by Ezzard would probably be the margin of victory. The thing about Ezzard Charles that gives me pause for consideration is that first bout he had with Marciano..admittedly past his peak, yet he duked it out and took it from the Rock for 15 rounds. This impresses me very much, and I'm sure he had that potential for toughness back in his glory year of 1950.

Depends on what Charles shows up to play. I'm gonna favor him in a close decision. Smothers well, has success with right hands more accurate than Ingo's, but eats some big hooks along the way.

I wonder does Charles have the power to ko Patterson?:think

Charles couldnt really punch at heavyweight. He doesnt hit as hard as Ingo (better fighter though obviously) but Patterson could be dropped by a challenger who only had moderate power.

    Charles couldn't punch at HW?

We've got filmed beautiful KO's of him slaying Valentino and Satterfield. And he undeniably hurt Louis, Walcott, Marciano, Ray, Oma, etc over the 175 limit. He was a good puncher. Not as aggressive or fast as the LHW pre-Baroudi version, but he had accuracy and speed in his punching, if somewhat inconsistent in application

Indeed that´s why I think Charles knocking Patterson down three-times isn´t unlikely. I doubt he finishes him off though.

    Charles by Decision

Cant count out Patterson though, his speed at HW is still brilliant especially when he throws his hook combinations. But Charles deals with his power, and has enough power himself to actually hurt Floyd. But i dont see a KO happening in both ends

I think Charles can knock out Patterson here, Patterson left himself open and Charles would probably exploit that better than anyone. This would be a hell of an exciting contest all the same

Where exactly did Patterson leave himself open? I'm not saying you're wrong, just sounds like a harsh criticism to me.

Patterson's style left him open. Ingo was able to drop him with the right hand, and Patterson leaping in should be a some what easy target for Charles. This was not the boxer Patterson after he lost the title. Patterson was still slugging it out in his title rein.

I expect Charles would find the openings. May be some what like the Pat Valentino fight.

I'm shocked nobody has yet rushed to Patty's defense and openly stated Floyd would out-hustle "The Cobraman."

However, be as it may be, I rate Charles at around # 14 and Patty at #'s 18 thru 20, depending on my mood / attitude for the day....

I care less what Ol' Bert R. Sugar claims in regards of rating Charles around the ATG top-5 heavyweight champs from 1887 to 2011.... Charles was great, but I can name 10 dude's from the last 124 years who'd take him apart.... That applies to Patty as well... Neither can crack my top-10 ATG list..... Nope..... Top-20 is fair....
