Prime Ali rarely clinched. VERY rarely. Don't say **** just because you saw some other moron say it two posts above. Learn boxing.
I do think clinching has become excessive, referees don't seem to want to penalize fighters for it anymore. I re-watched Lewis Vs Akinwande recently and had this fight be fought now not sure if Akinwande would get disqualified. By not allowing excessive clinching it would make fighters learn how to fight on the inside and we would have more entertaining fights, so I think it would be a good thing for the sport.
Not really......he ties up inside, but usually simply as a tool to reset. He is often the initiator of the break.:good
In fact, watch the Ali Frazier I fight and notice what they say about clinching and scoring. Shocking to modern ears!
It seems you're defining hold as refusing to break. I thought it to be a synonym for clinch, which Wlad is the instigator of more often than not. Yes he uses it as a tool to reset, but he abuses it at times. He had to "reset" a ridiculous amount of times in 4 rounds against Mormeck. I'm a Wlad fan, but he deserves criticism for the holding he does, and he has deserved to have had some points taken.
Prime Ali, when he slowed down (which is a BIG part of his career) he clinched a lot and he won his career defining fight for the most part by tying up and being tough. I don't like clinching like Wlad or Ruiz do but if we blame them we should blame some of the greatest fighters in the history of boxing as well and I don't dislike clinching if fighters punch in the clinch like Hopkins Guerrero or Ward do
Tyson held / grappled quite a bit. i dont see it as a problem as long as its holding to get in position to throw say an inside uppercut or hooks to the body ala Hatton.
There's a bit of a fine line though. Some fighters actually work on the inside, and use the clinch in an offensive manner, not merely to stall the action. Refs need to be able to make that call between a fighter who's actually being proactive, and a fighter who's not.
Yeah, to be clear I'm talking about guys who just hold until the ref comes and breaks them up. Body positioning and things like that to set up inside fighting is fine. Refusing to fight inside with a bear hug isn't.
