It was 50 years ago today...August 31, 1969...the day before his 46th birthday...that undefeated former Heavyweight Champion Of The World,Rocky Marciano (49-0 43 KO's)...died in the crash of a small plane near the town of Newton Iowa. Champ from 1952-1956...he wore the crown with class & humility.

    RIP Rocky.

What an awful way for a great champion to go out.

It's a shame, would have been nice for Rock to have being around in the 70 s /80 s and 90 s, to hear his opinion s on the heavyweights of the time.

Ironic, that's what I was planning to do

And absolute tragedy. And right after the filming of the superfight as well. His family had to vacate their house and buy something cheaper more inland after losing most of Rocky's money due to lack of will.

Rip Champ. 50 years on and still the most polarising figure on the forum. 55 years on and I'm still wounded on how badly he thrashed my hero.

Obviously I'm kidding but he left everything in the ring and defined Heart and Relentlessness simultaneously.
A little man who could thrash the men of his day and give any fighter in history a good showing. He doesn't meat my criteria of an ATG, by 2 places but some guys are so iconic and pure they deserve the title of it.

RIP Rocky. A Gentleman and a Warrior

For the sake of arguments I have ATG defined by top 100 and top 10 in a division.
I don't have him in my (unfinished) top 100 and have him at 12 at HW.

But I think him, Tyson and Dempsey all deserve to be ATGs but I don't have them fitting them categories

Would you have Vitali as an ATG?

    I agree with Vitali.

I would have Rocky as an ATG. Undisputed, Undefeated heavyweight is special. Then again, I'm not a heavyweight guy, especially legacy wise, so I'm not the one to ask.

I always note you down as a lower weight guy tbh. BitVersi is the go to for old school heavies, Lachbuster for 50s HWs, Seamus knows about all of them and people like Rob and Rules for 70s and 80s.

Rocky is 100% an ATG in my mind, but not by the criteria I've put forward. I'll make a few exceptions tho. Someone like Rocky or Tyson deserve to be called it, as do people like Saad, Gatti and Chacon based on heart
