I dont know about you but Im getting fed up watching the 1950s black and white American tv fights.

for one, Don Dunphy sounds super boring to me.

Also, I learned a long time ago that producers at the time loved to have low punching, granite chin boxers against each other because that ensured commercials money for the broadcaster, so Emile Griffith, Dick Tiger, Kid Gavilan, Willie Pep and Randy Sandy for example, were all showcased a lot. This makes sense, and they were all certainly great fighters, but when I see their names on You Tube, I think "Oh great, I get to hear Don Dunphy for another hour!"

What do yo all think about this? Do you agree or disagree?

Never liked Dunphy myself. His nasally tone gets to me, and besides, I think a duo of ring analysts is necessary to really keep an interesting flow going.

the fights I like just fine though.

Don Dunphy never really bothered me, although I can see he may not have been everyone's cup of tea. However, I LOVED those fights from the 50s as well as the 60s - especially those out of MSG. That was an era where fighters didn't just fight to win, but to put on a good show for the patrons. It was all about filling seats and if you put on a good show, you were going to be asked back.

I think what bothers me most is putting those low percentage ko guys with granite chins in order to ensure ad money....

I read about it on a bok named New Jersey Boxing IIRC.

The writer was friends with someone else who told him about that trick. And it totally makes sense from the producers' standpoint.

Side note. My dad worked in a lot of bars during the 1950s and early '60s. The boxers on those telecasts always wore black trunks or white trunks. (Even though it was broadcast in black and white, nobody wore red or green or yellow trunks. It was black or white.)

And there were a lot of running bets in bars where guys would wager on the trunk color. Didn't matter the fighter - probably because, like you said, they were evenly matched and people didn't hit too hard. Some guys always bet on the guys in white trunks. Some always bet on the guys in black trunks.

    Thought that was interesting.

I like Don Dunphy because he didn't waste time and talk too much telling you what you could see for yourself. I like that much more than I do the morons who won't shut up because they think that they need to say something all the time.
If you can't appreciate the likes of Griffith, Gavilan, and Tiger...I would suggest maybe the WWE broadcasts? The Paul brothers? How in the world can a boxing fan find willie Pep boring?
