A little before my time, but I am an appreciator if both guys. A lot of controversy surrounding this one: Ortiz is given 13-17 seconds during a very slow 8 count from Billy Conn. Conn stops the fight in the 5th (rings round of the year). Conn and the ringside Dr. Disagree about the stoppage. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Carlos_Ortiz_vs._Sugar_Ramos_(1st_meeting) These post fight announcers are the worst! “Ortiz is forcing the action now. Instead of...you know..the other guy” lol. You would think they could get his name. This content is protected Conn looks dreadful as a ref. Does anyone have any memories or stories from the conflict in this fight. The WBC overruled Conns decision. 20 minutes later the WBC tried to get Ortiz to return to the ring. Ortiz refuses WBC strips the belt and Championship is vacant. WBA sides with Conn’s decision and continued to recognize Ortiz as champ. Strange stuff
Has any fight ever continued after a stoppage (20 minutes in this case?). Seems strange to me to try and continue after 20 minutes or so?
Not that length of time but I recall Carlos Padilla (the most confused referee of all time) stopping the title fight between Danny Lopez and Mike Ayala in the 11th and then miraculously by forces known only to him, Padilla restarts the fight and Lopez stops him again in the 15th.
Crazy fight ruined by Conn. Ramos really shook Ortiz well in the first round. Ortiz came on strong though and then Conn lost control. I’d love to see the re-match. Ortiz had a brilliant record in re-matches. He must have been mighty impressive to stop Ramos so easily in that fight.
