Hello. First of all I would like to introduce myself. I am a married 52 year old, 140 lb. who is contemplating on trying to be fit. I am a beer drinker with a paunch in front of me and also a smoker (about half a pack a day). I am currently having lower back problems because during my days off from work (automotive electrician), I just sit in front of my laptop and read, watch Netflix movies on TV, and keep on thinking that I need to do this and that to be fit but have not done any of my plans. During my teens, I was a swimmer but eventually became a couch potato.

I plan on doing boxing workout and have been researching the types of punching bags out on the market...their pros and cons and the suitable weight, diameter, and length. I have information on those now but I was hoping to be a part of a community that will give me advise on how to start to do boxing as a cardiovascular exercise as well as building some muscle and muscular strength. I have no medical conditions at present except for my lower back pain that comes and go's whenever I lift heavy objects like car batteries. I hope that I have come to the right place.

first of, congratulations on making a decision that's treated rather "unusual" at your age,
second of,go to youtube and watch a tutorial or two about basics of punching and basic punches (jab, cross, hook, uppercut)
then look up a thing or two about footwork, moving from side to side, pendulum step etc etc

after learning the basic punches and basic footwork movements you are pretty much ready to go,do differently timed intervals of punching, you can do 3 minutes punching,1 minute rest and then repeating it for couple of rounds, like real boxing rounds,or shorten it depending on your shape, skipping rope is also good for getting in shape and it's really cheap, good luck :)

    1. Do More Strength Training, Do Less HIIT.
    2. But Not Necessarily Power Lifting.
    3. Do More Flexibility Training, Less HIIT.
    4. Stay Active All Day—And Walk, Walk, Walk.
    5. Relax in Your Downtime and De-Stress.

There are a lot of decent videos on Youtube regarding boxing as a method to get in shape. I'd recommend watching some of those. I think some of the better guys/channels out there are "Precision Striking" and "Tony Jeffries". In general i'd recommend to do basic heavy bag training like 3 minute rounds with high output and moving around. You don't have to be perfectly with the technique and all that stuff, just keep grinding and working the bag and you'll sweat and get in shape for sure. I'd also recommend some Cardio training in the gym like using the bikes etc. ...and more important: DO strength training. If you don't know how, ask in your local gym f they can give you some sort of introduction to the exercises and all that stuff. It'll strengthen your body, it's super healthy AND it'll get you in shape. Eat mostly clean and try to get some good amount of sleep in and you'll see the results.
