“Nigel's camp are still serious about going ahead with it,” Collins told talkSPORT when he was asked about the fight.

“I've applied for my professional boxing licence which I have been successful in receiving. I'm now a licensed professional.”

Collins, the only Irish fighter in history to hold world titles at two different weights, was brought to the attention of ‘Dark Destroyer’ Benn after his hope to renew his rivalry with Chris Eubank quickly faded.

“If they come up with a deal and if the money is there it'll happen, I've no other reason to fight.”

During the summer, Collins stated to BBC Sport: "It's just about money, a payday which will allow me to buy some more land. I have no problem with Nigel. I have a lot of respect. I like him. I get medicals every year and the most impressive part is my MRI. 'Excellent' was how the neurosurgeon described it. I'm very healthy and very fit."

He has to be in good shape if they granted him a license.

As long as it's another old geezer like Benn I'm alright with it.... Collins is the man btw. One of the most underrated fighters of the 90s.

Must be desperate for money or has some issues! You've done enough stay retired!

Collins would be better off banging a bunch of whores in bankok, he might even find a wife. Worked for Thurman and countless others.

Collins has an adult son and married I believe......

He admits flat out that money is a motivator, but I don't think he's hurting. He's been looking to make fights with Jones, Eubank and Benn for years.

I don't mind Collins v Benn 3 to be fair. They both want a payday, both same era, both are healthy, and us fans get to see 2 old world class legends have a glorified spar. Bet it ends up vicious though lol, even though there friendly ! Benn looks great on the pads

I thought he quit because of health reasons. I remember he hosted a documentary and said something like that?

I will have to watch the interview later. He looks totally different from how I remember him.

If it's for some senior tour kinda thing, I won't have a problem with it. But if he really expects to compete, it would be farcial for the sport.

Exactly... It would be a great attraction on an under card of a big fight. Regardless of what anyone says regarding the fight - a part of them is intrigued to see just how much these two old legends have left. I remember Foreman and Holmes wanted to create a masters division for HW. Why not? If these old guys are around it's each other they should be fighting as opposed to being used as record padding for a younger fighter. They can make money and the novelty of it all creates a decent buzz.

Thing is, I think it would be popular enough to headline a show. They would put a main attraction in the shade for a certain age group that grew up watching this pair.

A surprising amount of boxers have competed in their 50's, just in the recent past.

Marion Wilson fought until he was 50. Oliver McCall fought on until he was 49.

Larry Holmes of course fought until he was 52.

Then there's Bernard Hopkin's and Evander Holyfield.

Isn't there an active heavyweight over in Europe trashing cans who's in his 50's?

It's odd for sure, but it's become more common in recent years.

Probably thinking of Zoltan Petranyi or Andreas Sidon. Aged 51 and 54 respectively.
