Today marks 60 years since My fav fighter Rocky Marciano won the heavyweight championship of the world , by landing one of if not THE greatest punch in heavyweight history....The Suzie Q. The date was the 23rd of September 1952 , over 40,000 people attended to watch the big fight of the year, The fight for the biggest trophy in sports...The Heavyweight title... Walcott was quoted to have said rocky was an amatuar , and if he losses to Rocky he doesn't deserve the title.. Round 1 came along and it was obvious Jersey Joe was trying to stop rocky early , throwing wild power shots as Rocky came out slow, After the ref breaking them from a clinch Jersey joe walked in with a picture perfect left hook that dropped Rocky..The Punch was very similar to the one he landed on Ezzard Charles, When Jersey joe hit rocky he thought the night was over but was stunned to turn around and see Rocky standing at the count of 2... Rocky looked over to Jersey joe and Said "Im going to get you now you S.O.B". [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eldyoEdfC4[/ame] From that moment on Walcott knew he was in the fight of his life... Round after round Rocky kept pressing Joe, Blood coming from his mouth and from his head, The Middle rounds were hard for rocky as something got into his eyes and he was un able to see for 3-4 rounds. With 3 rounds left Jersey joe was up on all cards. Many people from Rockys hometown of Brockton put there house on the line betting on Rocky to win...the Bell for round 13.... Rocky come out leaning to the side, He circles around the ring with Jersey joe, Backing him up against the Rope... Both men throw right hands, But Rocky's was shorter, and more powerful....and landed first... Jersey joe slumped to the canvas as Rocky walked away...Looking over his shoulder to see The Heavyweight champion down and out....10 Seconds later Rocky was the New Champion of All the World...And was to become the Only undefeated HW Champion of all time...That was 60 years ago... and that record still stands and the Memory of The Brockton Blockbuster lives on...Over Rated by some...Underrated by Many...But Respected by All... imagine some of today's giants had the skill of these 2. Would make the heavy weight division worth watching.
Love this fight. Walcott is a masterful boxer and Marciano hits like a truck. Dont make heavyweights like this anymore.
