No heavyweight is as fast as Ali, but Holmes was damn fast nonetheless. Larry fought quite different, though. While he's a very skilled boxer, he wasn't a "runner". He used footwork for defence and picked his spots where he could, but he trades every now and then for the better or the worse. I believe, however, that he'd survive rough moments and dictate most of the fight pace with his outstanding jab and stamina to go with it. Very interesting matchup and clash of styles.
Liston's jab was overrated IMO. A very heavy and authoritive jab, but not as fast as Holmes' or as fluid; like a pure boxer's jab. Holmes' jab was better all round. I can see Holmes getting shaken or possibly dropped by Liston. For as long as it lasts Holmes would be outboxing Liston more often than not. He'd need to keep Liston turning, use the full ring, and keep off the ropes. The ocassional right hand for good measure would be well served. Liston's would force the issue, go to the body, use his own jab, and try and time his right hand over Holmes' jab. Holmes via decision.
I like Holmes by a whisker. Liston was not fast enough to put together a winning combination here. Holmes reaches the other side battered (and having battered) but clearly victorious.
Holmes ud. His speed and jab is too much for Sonny. He keeps Sonny spinning and doesn't allow him to plant his feet often. His jab cuts and swells Liston while Holmes's ribs get pounded. Holmes's right eye gets slightly puffy from a few hard jabs, but nothing to worry about. Holmes wins about 9-6 or 10-5.
