The original "Youngest Man to Win the Heavyweight title"...and my favorite of all....Hail King Floyd...now and forever!!
Patterson looked perfect in this fight. Unfortunately for him, he started to come around in an era where skilled heavyweights were getting bigger. Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali were like the father's of the modern day skilled heavyweights. Patterson could have had a long reign at light heavyweight, but he had outgrown it and there was no cruiser weight division yet. Patterson likely would have had a long reign there as well. Today, Patterson likely would have captured titles from super middle weight all the way to cruiser weight. And against the right opponent, like say a John Ruiz, could have even captured a heavyweight belt.
Look at our boy in that one Red! He looks like a blown-up bantam weight! Yes! Hail King Floyd!! So many memories of my hero; so many tears! Sidebar: how did your boys cop a 6-0 'snooze fest' against Indy yesterday? My gosh, we laid the proverbial 'goose egg'! Oh well, it's on to the college championship playoff or as a guy at the local sports bar yesterday called it: The Alabama Invitational!
Did you know that Patterson's oldest daughter was born on this same night? His wife had went into labor right before Patterson went into the ring. His handlers agreed not to tell him because they wanted his mind on the fight. So they agreed to tell him after the fight was over. So after the fight, Patterson and his handlers drove from Chicago back to New York so Patterson could see his newborn child.
Yeah, I'd read that. I think Floyd took home about $125,000 from the Archie fight, buying a home for his parents and setting up wife and child for a comfortable life!
Yes and still the "Youngest" to win the lineal title, taking the record away from the great Louis. Boxing historian, and fellow Cus protege, Tyson, fittingly followed by becoming the second youngest lineal champ. I know you know all of this, but I just like reminding others in these days of alphabet "champions", regular or not.
