Yes all you posters got this...The middleweights spawned such tragic and premature
    deaths as-
NON Jack Dempsey- died young from consumption
Stanley Ketchel- killed by a jealous hired hand at age 24
    Billy Papke- committed suicide
Harry Greb- died on operating table
Tiger Flowers-also died on operating table one year later
Marcel Cerdan- died plane crash on way to fight return bout with LaMotta
Carlos Monzon- died in auto accident
Dick Tiger- died from cancer age 42
And I ommitted Randy Turpin who Beat Sugar Ray in 1951, London..He committed suicide...

Surf-Bat you are correct...Kid McCoy did kill himself at the young age of 49....What a great but tragic division are the middleweights of the past !

Big Dick Tiger died from Liver Cancer........... 'Tis natural causes by medical standards........ Not tragic in a technical sense........ Regardless of being around age 42.....

Great to see Sands mentioned. Dont dismiss him for never winning a version of the Middleweight crown.. LaMotta wanted nothing to do with him and Olsen stated Sands was the man whose belt ordained the waistline of himself. (Olsen)

He'd have been M/W champion in a canter.

Les Darcy was the best M/W in the world in 1916-1917 until his death.

Educate yourselves before arguing with me. :good

I put him in then read the thread title again :deal I wonder how far he would have gone with the right connections, training etc. The entire fighting Sands family should be recognised for their contribution to the sport in this country, right down to nephew Russell Sands (80's welter)

It must have been pretty tough for Aboriginal fighters in those days...hailed as heroes inside the ring then having to deal with the open racism outside of it :-(

Bollox, in most cases the Aboriginal fighters endured prolonged careers at Bohemia (Qld) or Newcastle Stadium before the doors opened at any of the 2 Festival Halls (Bris & Melb).

Bobby Sinn had his first Sysdney Stadium appearance in 1953 against Jimmy carruthers (world champ in non-title) as a tune up for Carruthers vs Songritrat.. Sinn pelted the **** out of Jimmy who only fought once more before retiring and the ill fated comeback.. Sinn's performance was immensely praised by the hooting crowd when the desicion was given. 9000 people packed in for the bout.. Sinn claimed larger crowds fighting internationals and Aussie title affairs in Brisbane..

Jackie Ryan endured years of chasing an Aussie Lightweight crown.. He'd punched the life out of Charlie Dunn... the same man who'd KO'd the reigning champ in Pat Ford.. The Aussie Boxing scribes of the 1950's called long and hard for the Queenslanders chance for National honours.. All too much too late.. Ryan got his match when scar tissues failed to hold up after an extensive career. He lasted long enough, and led long enough to frighten Pat Ford.. Pat took the Empire Crown in his next bout.. Jackie Ryan is just an example of countless others.

Ron Richards and Elley Bennett were pretty much milked in the end by Stadiums LTD.. Bennett was also hounded by the Qld Department of Native Affairs. His purses were placed into a TRUST account as means of a retirement package... This same TRUST account was the subject of a Supreme Court Case for release of.. By 1996 the estimate value was $18million... However, Bennett died penniless in 1980-81..

Richards continued fighting until he was almost a shot man..

Bobby Scrivano is a fine example of the Satdiums handling. having lost an eye due to RESIN burns in the encounter with Elley Bennett in 1950-51, he was blinded afterwards.. When requesting compensation, Stadiums requested he fight Jimmy Carruthers for payment. Scrivano layed down in the first round. This he told me personally, and he is still alive, well and training young guys in Melbourne. 83 y/o.

Tom Maquire cops too much flack for the handling of the Sands boys. Bollox, attenetion needs to be payed to the demeanor of Aboriginal fighters also.. a good deal of them have a 3-4 year window in which trainers can nurture them before 'walk-about' brings out the natural temperament in them.. They'll fight, disappear and return to fight for a few lazy bucks.. and do it again and again.. That become the tool for the ******* promoters and managers to exploit the weaknesses of the Aboriginal fighter.

To be honest, Anthony Mundine is the only Aboriginal fighter to have bargained heavily in his own favour when fighting professional.. although he's done the trick in a rather disfavourable manner.

I wish Elley and the guys could have taken a few slices of that pie.
