If you could take 8 prime Heavyweights and put them in a tounament how would it look like? My tournament: Fight 1: Ali - Tyson Fight 2: Foreman - Holmes Fight 3: Frazier - Louis Fight 4: Lewis - Bowe Fight 5: Winner fight 1 - Winner fight 2 Fight 6: Winner fight 3 - Winner fight 4 Fight 7: Winner fight 5 - Winner fight 6
Fight 1: Ali - Tyson Fight 2: Foreman - Holmes Fight 3: Frazier - Louis Fight 4: Lewis - Bowe Fight 5: Ali vs Holmes Fight 6: Louis vs Lewis Fight 7: Ali vs Lewis close close final though SD to Ali
If the 1/4 final, 1/2 final, and final were held in one year and the fight was 15 rounds I think the outcome would have been: Fight 1: Ali - Tyson Fight 2: Foreman - Holmes Fight 3: Frazier - Louis Fight 4: Lewis - Bowe Fight 5: Ali - Holmes Fight 6: Frazier - Lewis Fight 7: Holmes - Lewis It would be much more interresting this way: 10 rounds Day 1: 1/4 Final Day 2: 1/2 Final Day 3: Final Fight 1: Ali - Tyson Fight 2: Foreman - Holmes Fight 3: Frazier - Louis Fight 4: Lewis - Bowe Fight 5: Ali - Homes Fight 6: Frazier - Lewis Fight 7: Ali - Frazier Draw
A prime Tyson is one of the most dangerous guys in boxing ever, and not many people could defeat him. A prime Ali, however, is one of the few that can. An '88 Tyson's head movement keeps him in this fight longer than a later Tyson, as does his tendency to set up blistering combo's instead of look for the big-punch as the later version did. Ali had a great jab and would use it to keep Tyson at bay, snapping it if not even landing, just to make Tyson think close about closing the distance. And obviously he had the best footwork and ring craft in the business, not to mention a great chin and ability to soak up big body punches. Obviously there are similarities drawn with the Frazier fights, and as we know Frazier did beat Ali when they were both fairly primed, both Frazier and Tyson have great left hooks, similar height, good head movement, good chins, big power and are aggressive, but the differences are the reason why Ali wins this fight. Because Frazier was an A+ in terms of working 3 minutes a round and constantly punching and backing his man up, whereas I don't think Tyson is. Also, I think Tyson could be discouraged if he was losing a fight and his mentality would drop, if Frazier was losing he had great heart and would stay in their and fight. Ali wins via 10th round technical knockout, the referee jumping in as Ali lands combo's and successive punches without Tyson landing in return. Prime George Foreman was a beast, and could knock out most guys. If he connected, I think he'd put Holmes down even though Larry had a very solid chin. But it's his recurperating skills, we saw that huge right hand from Shavers, perhaps an even bigger puncher than Big George, put Larry down and he was up very quickly. Holmes had the best jab in heavyweight history in my opinion, and the best movement and footwork since Ali, and great skills in general. He may not have a height or reach advantage over Foreman, but George wouldn't use it and therefore he'd always be in punching distance. I think Larry has enough to snap the jab and move continuously for 15 rounds and take a UD, though he may have to get up off the canvas once or twice to do so. I'm a big fan of Joe Frazier, but I don't think he matches up well in this fight. Louis is perhaps the best composite puncher in heavyweight history, he would land a variety of punchers with great accuracy, awesome power and sublime speed. Though Frazier had great head movement and that stalking style, which may add a few extra rounds onto his ring life expectancy in this fight, given that Louis may miss a bit and find it a bit more difficult boxing of the back foot - I still think the Brown Bomber takes it, via TKO around round 8 or 9. There's a reason this fight didn't happen, and that's because Bowe didn't fancy it. His mentality may be the key in this, I think Lewis had the better mentality and a lot more heart and would always find a way to win. They are pretty similar in terms of having great physical advantages, tall and rangy, both great on the inside, both can bang and box a bit for heavies, I just feel Lewis was a tiny bit better in most if not every department. I think Lewis had slightly better hand speed, and was more the maneuverable fight of the two. Bowe had a good chin so I don't think a knock out is in order here, so did Lewis despite what many say, so this goes the distance. Over 12, I take Lewis about 8-4, over 15 I think it's slightly wider. Will do the other fights a bit later.
Brought together by Time Machine 1: Ali-Dempsery 2: Lewis-Tyson (I 'flipped a coin' for this one) 3: Louis-Marciano (another 'coin flip') 4: Holmes-Holyfield 5: Ali-Lewis 6: Holmes-Marciano (if it's 15 round) 7: Ali-Marciano Born into same time 1: Ali-Holmes (could easily go other way) 2: Dempsey-Sullivan 3: Louis-Johnson ('coin flip') 4: Marciano-Jeffries 5: Ali-Sullivan (could easily go other way) 6: Marciano-Johnson (I 'flipped a coin'; I'd favor Marciano in a time-machine scenario) 7: Ali-Johnson (Could go either way; I'd favor Ali in a Time-Machine scenario). I could have gotten much different results, same fighters, different match-ups and brackets. Edit 3/29/09 'flipped a coin' -- figure of speech, roughly meaning 'I couldn't convince myself either way, so I pulled a name out my butt'; I didn't literally flip a coin.
What's with all the coin flips? Make a pick based on judgement not on a 50/50 coin toss. Louis would batter Johnson, I'd like to see him go defensive with Louis' offensive skills. Marciano would also batter him, and I'm not even a fan of Marciano.
What ? A prime Tyson would dispatch the heartless canadian Lewis in eight. You can't flip a coin on these things it's your post - Your opinion
fight 1 Tyson 8-4 over Ali, Ali is a head hunter and never goes for the body making it easier for Tyson to slip and counter also his dancing around will give Tyson the space he needs to create power might even be a knockdown scored by Tyson. Ali's chin and will see him through the final bell fight 2 Holmes ko 9 over Foreman. While Foreman can punch and Holmes can be drooped, Foreman leaves him self wide open. Holmes will score early and often and wear Forman down. fight 3 Louis 10-2 over Frazier if this were a 15 round fight I would go with Louis by 12th round corner stopage but Frazier has the chin and stamia to make it through all 12 rounds. fight 4 Bowe ko 9 over Lewis. The first 3 were easy picks for me yjis one is not. I would go with Lewis on the grounds that he has more skill and has a better career than Bowe. On the other hand Bowe is not that far behind in skill and while Lewis's chin is shaky Bowe's is pretty sold. I think thi will be the diffrence in the fight Lewis will be up on the scorecards when it ends. Fight 5 Tyson ko 7 over Holmes. A prime version of Holmes will last longer than the old version that realy lost to Tyson, but he will still get careless and get knocked out. Holmes might win a round or two. fight 6 Louis 9-3 over Bowe. While not a giant heavy weight like Bowe 6' 5" Louis at 6' 1" or 6' 2" is not a small man. Louis's near perfect form wins the fight Bowe's chin sees him through the last bell. Fight 7. Tyson 7-5 over Louis Like Bowe vs lewis this one is not easy for me to decide. I tend to go with boxer Louis over presure/swarmer Tyson. Louis also has the style unlike Ali and Holmes to beat Tyson. Stay in front of him Jab shot the straght when open grap him to reduice his power and uppercut in the clench. This stratgey is more or less desinged to wear Tyson down for a late round stopage. While Tyson may very well get frustrated he will still win rounds. Another factor is chin. A prime Tyson had one of the best in heavyweight history mabey only Ali's was better. Louis on the other hand could be knocked down he had great recouping power but a knockdown is a one point swing in the scoring. I think at some point in time Tyson will drop Louis probbly in the early rounds that and Tyson taking the early rounds and Louis taking the late rounds will result in a close win for Tyson.
"flipped a coin" A figure of speech, i.e, Couldn't convince myself either way, so I pulled a name out my butt. I didn't literally flip a coin. I'll go back to my post and put single quotes around the relevant words.
