8 weight divisions vs less 'world' titles: Which would benefit boxing more?

    We boxing fans realise there are some fundamental flaws with the sport we love. A major annoyance is the existence of some many 'world' titles in the same weight class. Put bluntly, the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF have become a complete joke with their diamond belts, super belts and interim belts. This, as well as stripping boxers of titles over practically nothing, and sanctioning fights at catchweight for a 'title' fight has left many boxing fans feeling both frustrated and let down.

    Another aspect of the sport which frustrates the life out of us is the existence of so many weight divisions. Currently we have 17 division in boxing, making it far too easy for fighters to jump up in weight. Surely the sport would be far better competition wise if we went back to the original 8 weight classes as each division would be stacked, meaning the best would be forced to fight the best.

    So, which would benefit boxing more, less 'world' titles (let's say two per division making unification fights still possible), or less divisions as a whole? Less world titles would mean the best would be forced to fight the best, and paper titles would be non exsistant. But having only the original 8 weight classes, each division would be stacked to the max. The Light Heavyweight division for example would have the likes of Pascal, Hopkins, Cloud, Dawson, Brehmer and Clevery be matched with the bigger Super Middles Weights like Froch, Kessler, Bute and perhaps Ward, as well as the smaller Cruiserweights dropping down. Would four world titles still be too many in this division?

    Of course we'd love for there to be only 1 or 2 world belts and 8 divisions, but which would benefit the sport more? I'd have to go with less divisions, ad that LHW division would make for fantastic watching. What do u guys think?

    Easy Vano. 17 weights with one champ per weight is by far preferable to 8 weights with 4 champs each.

    (IMHO!!)

    for sure only 8 weight divisions , like you said stacked divisions would make it nigh on impossible not be matched hard

    When did boxing go to ****? When it had more than 8 divisions or when it had 4 (and more) champs per weight?

    Aww but Gaz, I'm asking about 2 world titles in each division. Is that still preferable?

    Agree with Gaz. Having 4 'world champions' and all the various disguised world titles that underpin them makes for FAR more confusion than just having a lot of divisions. I think people can comprehend that, not even the most dedicated fans can keep up with the ABC's very easily.

    Plus how can you even have 4 world champions really? It doesn't make a lot of sense and purely on that principle it would go first if it was my choice.

    I can deal with 17 weights with one champ but 8 with 4 champs is much more confusing.

    Ideally I would cut out about 4 of the weight classes and have one champion in each but we can all dream i guess.....

    I remember when it was just the WBC and WBA and I'd def. take that with more divisions that having 4+ versions of champion. I think it would be easier for the causal fan to follow as well (which is a big problem in boxing today IMHO)

    i dont care if the guys are fighting for the bronze intergalactic interim belt , aslong as its a good 50-50 ish fight between some of the best in the didvison and with 8 divisions the quality of the pool of fighters to choose from goes up

    Unfortunately hag you do have to some kind of recognition. World titles do that. Without it the only fights that are great are the ones in your own mind. Which people don't always see the exact same way.

    Lets have 4 divisions then and really get a decent pool going.

    It won't make the fight more competetive if you have Cotto having to fight Martinez for the IBO Middleweight Bronze title. The better fight will likely be Cotto fighting at 154 at in a fight for the one, true title at that weight.
