8 weight divisions vs less 'world' titles: Which would benefit boxing more?

2 titles in each weight division would be great for boxing as long as the mandatories were forced through

 

Bit therein lies the issue, promotors having vested interest on maximum return. Steer a fighter towards a specific alphabet title to ensure he can justify selling ringside seats for £300-£500 because it's a world title!
I think because contracts and promoters involvement may not have been as sophisticated years ago, there wasn't as much scope for promoters to be to blame.
But now that television has been exploited to the extent it has, and other media sources we gave gone too far to turn back.
If we believe having too many weight classes is an issue then we must lay blame at the doors of the alphabets also.
Sanctioning fees for interim champions etc is a very shady thing, writing themselves cheques when it suits. But in all fairness, it's a business for making money. So who can blame them?

 

If you have one champion in each division the best have to fight each oher. We could get rid of a couple of the weight classes (super fly & super-bantam spring to mind) at the same time.

 

Id favour 8 or even 7 weight divisions compared to 17.


Heavyweight - 210+

Light-Heavy 190-210

Middleweight 170-190

Welterweight 154-170

Lightweight 140-154

Featherweight 126-140

Strawweight - 126 -

 

And 4+ champions per weight? Your bottom weight of 126lbs is unrealistic as well.

 

Getting rid of all the titles would be more useful for boxing as a whole for me, you could then clearly see who is the best in the division and there would be better fights etc.

 

I suppose the big issue is that it's not in anyone's interests to have a single world champion per weight class..... fighters and promoters make more money because of the increased number of titles, TV can flog fights on PPV etc. The hardcore fans know what's what anyway, the only person that suffers is the casual fan who tags along with their mates, but they probably don't care because their there to see someone get filled in and have a few beers

I mean, you've gotta love the WBA..... multiple champions per weight class within their organisation yet people still put up with it and pay the fees.

Until fighters and promoters turn round and say :finger nothing will change.

To answer the question, multiple titles is the bigger problem..... increased number of weight classes is only really an issue in the present climate where certain fighters can make big bucks from either Sky or HBO by fighting crap opponents - I'm talking Tony Jeffries, Victor Ortiz etc etc.

 

In tis day and age, one champ would be enough.

Think of all the good fighters that wouldn't be able to compete effectively at 126.

Maybe so, but in a sense im trying to force a mini evolution for boxers (that if i were some billionaire who could buy out all the major championships) where you see fighters HAVING to come in better becuase they are facing the best of the best.


Imagine Mayweather having to be forced to fight top level fighters 4 times a year without any hint of cherry picking.
