Much of a muchness really. Neither Joshua or Wilder "earned" their title shot. They both had powerful promoters helping them jump the queue.
You usually don't get a voluntary when you win a vacant title. Stiverne was the mandatory for Vitali. Vitali retired rather than defend. So when Stiverne won the vacant title by beating the holy hell out of Arreola, he was ordered to fight Wilder. If Don King could've gotten Stiverne out of that, he would've. King even offered Wilder a step-aside fee if Wilder would let Stiverne unify with Wlad. But Wilder and Finkel said give us $10 million and we'll step aside, knowing King would never pay it. So, Stiverne fought Wilder. Stiverne fought really well that night. He just didn't win. If the Wlad who fought Jennings and Fury that year fought that Stiverne, that would've been a pretty good fight, too.
I believe so. I voted for Wilder in Joker's current P4P hardest puncher thread. Of course, Wilder is moving farther away from his prime day by day and Inoue is fully in his glorious prime so my mind may change in the next fight or two.
Wilder is important because he proved that just punching really hard and accurately with one hand often overrides everything else in boxing.
Isn’t it funny how Wilders team and Lions den stopped sharing details about his ‘broken hands’ when they accidentally provided Getty images as proof
Not sure about that. The WBC is not exactly down the line when it comes to mandatory obligations. For example, on the one hand, WBC allowed Lomachenko to fight for undisputed after winning their vacant title. On the other, they asked Canelo to make voluntary against Yildrim after winning the vacant WBC (though some say that was a favour to Canelo). Regarding other orgs allowing a voluntary after a vacant title win, that appears to be quite usual. Charles Martin and Caleb Plant being cases off the top of my head. Whereas, an org threating to strip their new champion who wants to make Undisputed seems unusual. Are there many examples of that happening before?
Uh, when you fight all bums, yes. Wilder never attempted to unify with Klitschko, he faked a PEDs controversy and paid out millions to avoid Povetkin, he cherry picked a Fury who he thought was done and was embarrassed, and then there was the Biblical shellacking. As long as you fight the medically unfit, yes, all you need is the punch.
Wilder was the first American to win the HW title since 2007 when he won it in 2015: the longest drought in American boxing history. He was also the only American on his 11 man team to medal at the 2008 Olympics, in a squad that contained 4 other future world champions.
Stiverne had a much better chin and more confidence/determination than Martin, much better wins and more experience too.
Wilder’s best wins Stiverne 1: world title debut, never gone past 4 rounds before, expected to be “exposed” by many, close to even odds, step up in level of opponent, 12 round near shut out UD with one KD (Stiverne had never been knocked down in 26 pro fights) against a slow footed but heavy, big punching, iron chinned, determined, aggressive, experienced, heavyweight champion, the only time Stiverne was outpointed in 31 pro fights, Wilder became the first American heavyweight champion in 8 years: by far the longest world title drought in the storied history of American heavyweight boxing Ortiz 1: 7th consecutive defence, step up in level of opponent, ahead 85-84 on the scorecards, 10th round stoppage with three KD’s (Ortiz had never been knocked down in 30 pro fights) against a slow footed but heavy, determined, skilled, experienced, Pan American Games HW gold medallist, heavily hyped, explosive southpaw counter puncher, 30-0 contender and future 2x world title challenger, 214 lbs Wilder came back from being hit with a flurry of flush bombs in the 7th and didn’t get knocked down Breazeale: 9th consecutive defence, brutal 1st round one-punch KO against a defensively challenged and slow but tall, rangy, heavy, heavy handed, determined, rough, SHW Olympian and 2x world title challenger, Wilder got rid of Breazeale 6 rounds earlier than rival Joshua
Good on him..... Not the best style and really needs a coach to put him on a treadmill to stop him from getting gassed so quickly.. However all his fights are exciting and he puts it all out there once he is in the ring which is great for all of us watching
