There are many sports and events where performances have plateaued and in some cases even declined. Taking the men's Long Jump for example, the top 8 jumps of all time are at least 20 years old. There are only four jumps from the last 10 years in the top 40. The jump that won the Olympics last year was the 582nd best jump in history. This is despite improvements in training, nutrition (and probably doping). Athletes are supposedly bigger, faster and stronger, yet they are somehow getting worse at an explosive athletic event that is heavily attribute-based. This obviously doesn't prove that Ray Leonard was better than Floyd Mayweather, but what it should do is challenge the simplistic and lazy belief that all sports are automatically better now than they ever have been.
Woah woah so mostly the heavy weights from the 60's 70 and 80 's would be fringe contenders atsch:rofl Geth F out of here !! The heavy weights today can't even box effectivley half them have no inside game are poorly conditioned ! Yeah fringe contenders
only HW boxers who have a stand a chance would have been the klitchkos.that i'm gladly accepting,HW boxing is pathetic nowadays.Helenius rated in top 10 :rofl can you imagine helenius 60's or 70's :rofl
Excellent example. There are many others as well. The Heptathlon world record is 25 years old, the long jump record is 20 years old, the men's 400m hurdles world record is 21 years, the men's pole vault record is 19 years old and the men's triple jump record is 18 years old. The longer standing athletics records tend to have a skill element rather than just pure speed or power. Boxing of course has a huge skill element. Today's boxers maybe better athletes that does not mean they are by default better than the previous champions because they may not be as skillful.
Marlon Starling, Juan Laporte, Rocky Lockridge, Matthew Saad Muhammed, Eddie Gregory, Julian Jackson, John The Beast Mugabi, Michael Carrbaho, Edwin Rosario, Mike Ayala, Jeff Chandler, Richie Sandoval, the list goes on and on.
this place is amazing, guys like you think a fat, slow, weak, 5-10, 205 lb guy with no athletic ability would stand a chance now. fyi, hesucked at bicycling, swimming, sprinting, every single event he finished last. ali never competed in it, because he saw how badly frazier was humiliated.
