Which decade had the better heavyweight fighters?

    With names including:

Dokes, Tillis, Berbick, Pinklon Thomas, Douglas, Tucker, Tubbs Bruno and Tyson

How do they compare with the likes of:

Lewis, Holyfield, Ruddock, Bowe, Golota, Tua, Grant etc...

Apologies if I have missed out any obvious names but you get the idea!

Also, what effect does the answer have on the records of people like Tyson who straddled both decades?

Are we saying this makes the records of people like Lewis and Holyfield better than Tyson's?

What does that also say about Bowe? His record was practically made up of those 80's guys!

The also-ran's in the eighties were better. The nineties had Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis and Tyson all active at the same time as the top names. The eighties had Holmes, then a gap then Tyson. It depends on how you look at it.

Holmes is a pretty big omission from the 80s. It's close to a toss up IMO with a slight nod to the 90's

80's by far. Much better skilled boxers and fighters. Most of the 90's guys had very little boxing skills and overall was a group of one dimensional fighters.

The 90's had the more elite fighters..... but there wasn't much by way of them actually fighting each other.

    Bowe ducked Lewis
Tyson was in jail when a Bowe fight would have been relevant
Tyson vs Lewis was irrelevant in 2002

The 80's had Tyson and Holmes as dominant guys, in between those two the others were constantly fighting and beating each other.

Totally agree...Holmes smashed his way through the eighties taking big names like Ali, Spinks, Jones, Berbick and many more with clean records...this bloke drew large crowds and massive TV audiences.

Hard to split for me...the 90's was all about the Hype and the show. Some of the more memorable incidents really highlight this decade. The clown paraschuting into the ring in the middle of the Bowe V Holyfield, Bowe V Golotta 1 & 2, Douglas taking Tyson, Lewis V Golotta...the list goes on with Lewis or the White Rhino etc..

The 90's, the 80's HW's generally had a lot of potential but most just never panned out, being unable to hold onto HW belts for too long. Seriously, with the exceptions of Holmes, Michael Spinks, and Tyson, who else had long reigns as HW champ in the 80's?

Besides Lewis who had long reigns in the 90s? After Bowe and Holyfield, around 95 there was really a group of not so great contenders, who could beat each other on any given night. Lewis had noone who could give him a real fight, by the time he was at his best.
I guess the early 90's fighters were closer to the 80's heavies with there being a big difference between the mid 90's fighters and on, if thats not too confusing.
Look at how some of the 80's guys and early 90's guys were able to compete with Lewis; Mercer, Mcall, Bruno, they were his toughest fights.
