I've heard more than once that Curry might have had issues with cocaine. Don't know if it's true but I heard it a few times. It would also explain his rapid decline at a time he should have been in his prime.
Curry's getting a tad overrated here by those claiming he'd beat every WW or almost every one. Again, he probably lacked the mentality and durability to beat the best of the best, though he had the skills to contend. Robinson, Leonard, Hearns, Napoles, Gavilan, Griffith, Rodriguez, Burley, Williams, Basilio, etc could all be favored, and most of them should. Guys like Whitaker and Benitez are pretty much 50/50.
curry was a very, very good boxer/puncher that fell short of being a great. 86 curry i'd give a great chance in outboxing margo, but not knocking him out. mcrory is good fighter, but not a margo. curry had the size to be successful up to middleweight, but he had some very strong personal issues that could of crippled any man. i'd pick him by a SD12 over margo, but i'm sure margo could take his best shots, even that mammoth left hook he laid on mcrory. who knows how curry would of handled margo's uppercuts or reacted to his body attack
I don;t see that much overateing, the most people have said is that Curry was on that next tier below the absolute ATGs of the division, it was Benny who was trying to draw out a "everyone but Robinson" post from someone....
Right... He is h2h nightmare for anyone tho, up to and including Robinson, and he would beat Sweat Pea without a doubt('85 version)
I think there's cause for plenty of doubt, considering how highly contested his bouts with Marlon Starling were. Whitaker had a better offensive arsenal, a higher workrate and a better, more efficient jab than Starling did. Not to mention he was better offensively off the backfoot. It would be a highly technical and competitive affair IMO. I'd probably favor Curry just slightly, but I don't think it's set in stone at all. Also, skilled as Curry was, he doesn't stand much chance against a Hearns or Leonard due to stylistic and durability issues, to say nothing of Robinson.
Im probably the biggest Curry fan here and have seen him fight in my time not videos. The guy was one of the greatest amateur fighter the USA has ever produced. His pedigree is undeniable. His style was slick and smooth. Quick hands, good power, good defense, good footwork, he was good at everything, not great at one thing. But a complete fighter if there was ever one. It took a ballsy Brit to break Curry forever, he wasnt intimidated by the "Cobra" . Honeyghan changed Donald Curry, he showed the world that Curry didnt like the aggressive rough stuff, he broke Curry mentally. After that the cobras career went downhill, sure there were other factors leading to his demise, but name me a fighter without an excuse. Margo would have broken Curry down maybe worse than Honeyghan did
You're claiming Starling had a better offensive arsenal than Whitaker? I don't think it's very debatable at all really, unless you simply don't know much about either fighter. Whitaker would beat Margarito quite easily, they're different levels of fighters and stylistically Whitaker is poison for him. Margarito would lose to most elite WW's.
You may have been a Curry fan, but you're not taking everything into account here. Curry was having severe issues making the 147 pound weight limit at that point in his career, the only reason he stayed was to keep his title. Also, Margarito had nowhere near the speed and explosiveness to catch even a weight-drained Curry off guard consistently the way Honeyghan did. And Curry had shown in many prior fights that he could handle the "rough stuff" very well, as he was a terrific in-fighter with a great base and balance. Margarito doesn't really have anything in his arsenal to worry Curry with, particularly a prime version.
He was indeed a great in fighter but I am now reevaluating Curry`s mental toughness, he was never able to recover from that loss. The guy was bit timid, I think his mental toughness is suspect to say the least. His best win for me was Starling. Mccrory was a Davey Moore type, more hype than anything. I feel now that had he fought McCallum earlier, his career would have been over sooner
Starling was one of those fighters had the style to make supposedly 'better' fighters struggle. I think Curry just getting past Starling is a good enough result.
Curry beat Starling VERY clearly in the rematch. He didnt "just" get past him. Starling would have boxed the **** outta Margarito as well.
