Who wins this matchup and why?

I favor Tyson 2/1 oddswise but let me explain -

This would probably be one of the most brutal heavyweight fights in history (think Hagler-Hearns for heavies) - two of the most offensive minded heavyweights we've seen and both guys had real firepower. Tyson certainly had more one punch power than Bowe, and hit a bit harder, but Bowe had very good power nontheless. Bowe had every punch, particularly a great uppercut.

I have been working my way through Bowe's fights from 89-92 and am constantly impressed by how many punches Bowe throws per round and how aggressive he was. No doubt Bowe's weakness was his defense, he could definitely be hit. But he fought an aggressive style that allowed him to try and bomb off on the inside. And Bowe had an excellent jab when he used it. Bowe's fight against Tyrell Biggs I found particularly impressive - he was very agressive the whole fight coming forward, used his jab when needed, and eventually put Biggs out by the 8th round.

Bowe's win against Holyfield in 92 is certainly his peak, but he had quite a few fights before that where he looked impressive. I know the knock is he was not in with many big punchers, but Bowe's skills speak for themselves. Not only was he great offensively, but he had a really good chin. Bowe did bob and weave some, moved his head a bit so he wasn't completely oblivious to defense.

The Tyson of 88 certainly needs little explaining except to say that he was one of the most impressive heavy's I've ever seen and still believe 88 Tyson would have a live shot against any ATG heavy. Unbelievable combination of speed and power.

Now how does this matchup go? Like I said, I favor Tyson 2/1 odds wise. I'd say Tyson takes this by 6th round KO. Both guys would score big, both could take a punch, in fact I see both guys getting knocked down a distinct possibility. I just don't see this going to the cards. Bowe would give Tyson potentially a lot of problems on the inside, but Tyson at mid range would be deadly. Bowe's chin and Tyson's chin would make this a longer fight than the bombs landed would indicate. But overall Tyson's defense in his prime was significantly better than Bowe's, and Tyson would eventually decimate Bowe with a combination that puts him out.

So I say Tyson by 6th round KO in a fight that would be like Hagler/Hearns for heavies.

    So what say you?

Tyson by spectacular 3rd round KO. I think Tyson would love Bowe coming at him attempting to trade. Tyson's superior combination punching and ferocious speed would be the telling difference between the two.

I would have to favour Tyson to score the knockout...simply for the fact that, while Bowe has the right tools to outbox Mike, I think he'd be looking to go toe-to-toe and trade.

I'm sure Futch would be trying like crazy to convince Bowe to stick with his jab and tie Mike up to begin with, before pouring on the heavy firepower in the second half of the fight. But Bowe would just want to slug, I feel.

And slugging with '88 Tyson is not a very good idea.

Tyson by stoppage in 6 rounds or so seems a pretty reasonable prediction to me. I just can't trust Bowe to fight the right way to beat Mike. While this should be a style matchup in favour of Bowe, it's his mentality that's the problem.

Got to agree with you regarding Tyson inside. He liked to fight at midrange.

Id back Tyson to get this one, but Bowe can beat him from outside or outwork him inside and Big Daddy threw great uppercuts which are Mikes kryptonite.
Tyson would probably land at mid range enough to shake Riddick but would have to finish him or it could be a tough night for him

I see Tyson as the "constant" in the equation.

If Bowe is a bigger stronger version of Buster Douglas, then why wouldn't the result be the same with Tyson flailing around down on the canvas trying to put his mouthpiece back in?

the tyson in 88 wasnt exactly lazy on the inside like u guys make it seem either...sure recently he was willing to hold but back then it seemed everytime mike was tied up he would shoot a nasty combination to the stomach and a huge uppercut between the guard.

about the topic though...i would pick tyson by ko within 5

Tyson, by mid-stoppage. Bowe has a chance if he doesn't slug toe-toe, but I think he would.

I always thought Bowe would give Tyson a lot of trouble with his size and inside game, but I think it was Nick Hudson who posted some of Bowe's opponents connect percentage, and most of them were above 50%. That was a rather startling statistic.

If Tyson was to land more than 50% of his punches vs. basically anyone, the fight would not last long.
    Tyson, inside of 6 rounds.
