I have several - how long have you got? Perhaps you could persuade them to come onto the brit forum for a Q&A session after their next fights are out the way? Good luck to them both on Dec 8th!
Been announced that John Murray will share top billing with Branco McKart in Vegas. Good year so far for the Murray brothers with John winning the English Title earlier this month (he may be defending that against John Fewkes as there is speculation the Board will sanction it). Joe Murray won a medal at the recent World Amateur Champs and booked his place at the Olympics so well done to him as well. Think Craig McEwan is based in the States now and trained by Freddie Roach. American Dave Saunders has been named as his opponent in Vegas on the 7th.
Sorry Steve but I am at a loss to understand your argument. On another site you replied to my query by stating that it was not the Horta fight you were referring to as being the "hard fight" but the Vuma fight which was in July some 5 months before the scheduled fight with Kell. The question is, if Mark is not yet recovered from the Vuma fight, which I find difficult to believe, what the heck was he doing fighting Vuma who is, arguably, as tough an opponent as Kell Brook? I can sympathise with a recent bout of flu, depending how severe and how long ago, but the hard fight argument simply doesn't wash, sorry.
To be fair to Thompson he has been in two hard fights during the last 6 months - Vuma and Horta. What I don't understand is where this suggestion that Thompson hasn't recovered from the Vuma fight has come from as it doesn't appear to be in this thread? It seems to me the confusion really surrounds the fact Sports Network decided to announce Thompson v Brook for Dec 8th when they were both already scheduled to appear on other bills.
It comes from a reply by Steve to a post by me on Boxrec. The only one provisionally scheduled was Kell v Gary Young but these things do change, don't ask me why, the politics and mind games in this sport confuse me. Mark, on the other hand, has not been named on any schedule until late last week and that today is still a TBA, so nothing definate appears to have been arranged for Mark. My own view is that once the purse bids were in, the title contender fight must surely take priority for both lads. If I were them I wouldn't want to risk losing to a journeyman before I fought an eliminator when I have a definate chance at the British title. Shame really because it would be a good match. One thing you can be sure of, whatever the outcome, it is unlikely to be either Mark or Kell who make the decision. By the way the Young fight was scheduled for the 15th, not the 8th and as I said above, if I were Kell's manager I wouldn't want to risk even the remotest possibility of a loss before a title eliminator.
That explains it - I don't post on box rec. I do recall that when VIP announced their 8th Dec Wigan show in a thread on here at the beginning of November Thompson was named as fighting on their bill. Brook v Young 15th Dec was announced on FWTV mid October and they knew then that Brook had been nominated for a title eliminator. My understanding is that purse bids were called for Nov 14th. SN won those and as early as Nov 15th went on to announce Brook v Thompson would be added to the 8th Dec Khan undercard - how that date was arrived upon seems to be the issue and not the fight itself. Like you I don't understand the politics that goes on in boxing and its a shame the promoters haven't come to some alternative arrangement between themselves avoiding the need for the Board to rule on a deferral which is what I presume is being asked for in the circumstances. I hope they decide this match up will still go ahead at some point.
Another one for December 8th! Apparently Danny Williams is fighting Oleg Platov on the Elcock undercard in Switzerland. Will be for the IBF Inter-continental Heavyweight Title.
It has been reported that Frank Maloney is trying to achieve a direct route to a World Title opportunity for Jamie Moore. Maloney is said to be hoping to lobby the World Boxing Council to make Moore's European Title shot against Baysangurov on Dec 8th a World Title eliminator. If successful, the winner of that fight would then meet either the WBC title holder Vernon Forrest or Michele Piccirillo who are due to face eachother on Dec 1st.
Another Englishman, Stourbridge cruiserweight Rob Norton, will box on the Elcock-Abraham undercard. Got a call from Rob, the current English cruiserweight champion, this morning and he said he is boxing someone called Enad Licina over eight. Licina sports a statistically-good 10-1 (7) ledger, but has never fought anyone of note. Ismail Abdoul, the iron-chinned veteran who has taken Enzo Maccarinelli and David Haye the distance, was outscored by the German-based Serb in September, which indicates pretty good form. But i've read a draw would have been a fair result. Norton, a hard-hitting counter-puncher from the Black Country, said he expects to see him off in three or four rounds and then petition the board for a second crack at the British title in the New Year.
With so may englishmen being added to the swiss bill it makes me wonder if theres a UK tv station somewhere interested in the bill.
According to FWTV, coverage for the Khan v Earl bill will start at 7.40pm on ITV4 and will then switch to ITV1 9.55pm for the Khan fight.
Opponents are beginning to be announced for the British boxers fighting on the 7th Dec in Vegas. John Murray and Lee Meager both face mexicans - Miguel Angel Mungui and Jose Alberto Gonzalez. Hennessy is hoping to get this shown on TV in the UK.
Maybe destroyed by a classic forrest, but this forrest really is a shell of the fighter he once was. He'd start huge favourite, but Jamie would give him a decent fight. Saying that Vernon smashed Piccirillo in 11 on the weekend. Piccrillo wouldve been beaten by jamie a couple of years back IMO, but all the same Vernon proved there is a big gulf between European and World class. Long way to go before a WBC title shot IMO, and Moorsey needs to recover form shoulder surgery and beat what looks like a very solid champion in baysangurov before thinking of title honours. Big year for him, 2008.
