I was doing research for uni into injuries in boxing and this stat came up from the The American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

This can't be right surely? No way would that many boxers sustain brain injuries, or does it just sound worse than it is?

They're not necessarily serious brain injuries. I can well believe 90% of boxers suffer some level of brain damage.

Wasn't this to do with the brains had altered over time? I remember something like this coming up and the debate was "damaged" vs. "altered to no detrimental effect" vs. "changes though natural ageing".

    Or summat like dat.....

I dont know wouldn't be surprised if it was that high to varying effects i mean you cant expect to have an amateur career and then 10 years of sparring and 30 fights of getting hit in the head without expecting to suffer some sort of damage.

Its like long distance runners im sure that 90% will suffer from some form of arthritis in their life due to their sport

Nah just says damage- says it in a manner that alludes the impression that boxing is this vicious horrible sport.

Constant impact to the brain by a trained puncher will cause some brain damage. Lots of boxers suffer from reduced co-ordination. Doesn't mean they've got Parkinsonism or similar.

Exactly. If that body of neurosurgeons have a angle to push it will be "damage", another study looking to push a different, pro boxing, agenda might call it "change".

Just because the report come from an official body don't assume thats its not written without an agenda and worded accordingly.

It doesn't take a doctor to work out that repeated blows to the head will have some effects on the brain.

Or that people in other sports don't suffer neurological damage. Rugby players, for example.

The difference is that some people think the point of boxing is to permanently damage the other man.

By the same token 90% of people who get pissed most weekends suffer brain damage. It's all about degrees.

Yeah it's just one of those statistics that could be used either way. A lot of things that are commonly done away from boxing also can cause injuries as previously mentioned (drinking, heading footballs, listening to loud music, all sorts of things).

Its weird- boxing gets such a **** reputation really bout these sort of things- I think I read a study once that had fatalities in sports and on average boxing was one of the lowest.
