He was better than Wlad. Better stamina , better composure , better jab , better work rate. Put it this way. David Haye would have left the ring on a gurney against Foreman. Povetkin would have been brutally knocked out. Chambers would not have seen 6 , never mind 12.
I have to give you a reality check here. Old Foreman basically lost on the score cards to every world class opponent he ever faced. His come from behind knockout of the less than durable Moorer, was an incredible accomplishment, but he was no world beater at this point!
Old Foreman? Yes, Toney could beat the Foreman of the 90's. Wlad was younger, faster and overall much better than Old Foreman. We're talking about 40 something George Foreman here. You're overrating him. Stop it. Again, why are you comparing Briggs and Byrd? Briggs WISHES he could box like Byrd. And Old Foreman never beat a boxer as good as Byrd. Alex Stewart and Tommy Morrison were two bangers that adjusted and did what needed to be done against Old Foreman. In fact there are countless threads why certain fighters have a stylistic disadvantage against Foreman yet changed their style to defeat him. Why can't Byrd can do it? He's a skilled boxer, certainly far better than an Alex Stewart, Axel Schultz or Tommy Morrison.
And Wladimir should have lost by DQ TO pETERs and Povetkin. Thats a reality check. I know that he would blow a hole into the post Lewis era of HWs. The 90's was stacked with talent. The post Lewis era was the thinnest talent pool of any organised sporting endeavour i ever witnessed in my entire life.
Morrison was also there to be hit. Byrd would be a far more difficult target. He's the pure definition of a "slickster".
Alex Stewart was very lucky to escape the second round having been knocked down hard twice. He spent the rest of the fight running away for his life. Byrd isn't a runner , nor has he quick feet. George would have blasted Moorer away in the first or second round if he slapped like Byrd. Byrd could barely beat Williamson and got a gift against the useless MaCline. He could be beaten with hooks and uppercuts. Foreman had deadly power in those shots. Byrd takes a left like the one that destroyed Rodrigeuz
Zero memory of that last claim .. absolutely zero. Newman and Bowe would have jumped at such an easy payday ..
Holyfield, small. Moore, small. Cooney, slow. Stewart, slow. Coetzer, slow. Who exactly did he beat ?
90's Foreman pre Holyfield will eventually catch Byrd. Holyfield who felt everyone's power said Foreman hit harder than everyone he fought, let that sink in... That's harder than Tyson, Lewis, Mercer, Bowe and everybody else.. Look Byrd is slick but, he loved to lay inside and slap around big slow guys. Foreman would set traps for Byrd, he liked to tap tap tap you before bringing the heat!!! Foreman will come up and with something heavy maybe first to the body and then a club to the head and Byrd will be gone!!
Byrd by decision. Tommy F cking Morrison did it while clumsily jogging in circles, winded, and sporadically eating flush punches despite packing glass.
Well, Foreman was reported in all the media as calling out Bowe. Bowe's manager mentioned Foreman as an opponent too. Negotiations occurred. Because you can't remember it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Foreman later said he thought the fight was very close to being made and had a verbal committment from Newman and didn't know what had happened. It seems Newman walked away from it and then digged up Dokes for Bowe. At the time of the negotiations it was reported that Foreman had rejected Newman's first offer because it didn't represent Foreman's drawing power in the fight. (Let's not forget that Frank Maloney and Lennox Lewis admit that they rejected two offers from Newman around the same time, one which was pretty good.) Newman and Bowe took the far easier Bowe fight for far less money.
