In late '94 The Ring rated them as the top 2 heavyweights. Strangely I never saw this matchup touted even once.
Foreman punches harder and McCall won't be able to move him back. He keeps the pressure on the entire fight. I believe McCall would break down mentally at some point. I actually had Holmes winning against McCall by 1 point. Either way, it was an extremely close fight.
McCall was stable outside of the Lewis rematch. I don’t think Foreman was in a hurry to fight guys like that in his comeback.
Actually, in the Holmes fight, if you watch his ring walk, he was making the same contorted facial expressions as though he was crying. And just as in the second Lewis fight, he kept turning his back and walking away against Larry. These behaviors just were not full-blown as they were when facing Lewis the second time.
You are right. I talked to some of the people who managed McCall at one time. They told me that in the early 90s when McCall wasn't making any money and was mostly sparring, they were at a fight where Foreman was present. They told McCall that he should go talk to Foreman about getting a fight. McCall approached Foreman and told Foreman that he would like to be considered when Foreman was lining up fights. They said that Foreman knew who McCall was, knew that he was durable, and could punch. Foreman told him something like "that's not going to happen son."
George did handpick his opponents. However, Foreman would take a fight with anyone if there was a title on the line.
George had great management and was a very good salesman. He knew who he could, couldn’t and had to beat. He rode the gravy train like no one else for a relatively safe career. Qawi in some ways showed us the ceiling of his comeback boxing ability if not for Dwight’s shape he could’ve fizzled out right there but I think Qawi knew what he was meant to do and why he was chosen just like Cooper and Cooney.
With the money being thrown around at George and all the lucrative champions hanging around I think any sane man would. Evander was small and not a very hard swatter, Foreman was game. Against Tyson he could retire rich with the right build up with Bowe? If the moneys not enough Well why not fight the fragile come forward Morrison who was I believe fresh off the set of RockyV?
Yep, a conditioned Qawi, likely would have ended the comeback, but a conditioned Qawi would not have gotten the fight. Same for Cooper, if he had been living clean, he wouldn't have gotten the fight. Cooney, another "name", but because he had been inactive and had substance abuse problems he got a nice pay day. To get the opportunity for the pay day/exposure, the fighter had to be either not training, have substance abuse problems or just be a guy without much power or durability.
