I wonder if Tyson ever felt dumb for leaving the Catskill Team. After all, he watches T.V. and he has had to come across documentaries and interviews with people having the opinion that he slipped when he left Kevin Rooney. For leaving that ability behind and seeing himself decline. Knowing that you showed toughness against Douglas, sure, but you looked like **** because you were unprepared, Mentally, Physically, and Technically. For making one of the dumbest decisions a Champion has made for leaving "what got you there," in exchange for knowing the history of the sport better than anyone and knowing that Don King has been proven to ruin fighters careers...yet he still got suckered. Holyfield and Tyson were both past their best when they met. However, unlike Tyson, Holyfield didn't over-look his nemesis. He still trained hard. And he still trained his MIND, Body, and TECHNIQUE...and he had a proper game-plan.
If you remember Holyfield came out of retirement in '95 as well. He felt it was his destiny to face Tyson and defeat him. Like Buster Douglas, Holyfield was lucky to have fought Tyson when he did. I'm sure Tyson knows what's been said about him in regards to leaving Rooney. Don King got him because King was smart about money. He told Tyson to freeze his account so that Robin Givens couldn't get her hands on his money. Believe it or not I think that was the main reason that Tyson trusted King. Cayton looked to have been taking advantage of Tyson as well. Imagine the whirlwind surrounding him in these moments of seeking trust. Cayton, Givens, Rooney....and Don King comes along and knew exactly what to do. Quite a ****ed up situation, and Mike was only 22 years old.
I thought it was the opposite. King eventually made Tyson cash it in while Cayton said to keep it safe and that she can't touch it...or something like that? Cayton and Jacobs made sure Tyson was very "frugal," with his money. I recall Steve Lott saying in an interview something about allowing Tyson to buy a radio system and Jacobs was furious. He thought it better for Tyson to save his money just in case he would need it later. {I hope I remembered that correctly} And that was the point to the Savings Account that Tyson was meant to cash in until much later after he was retired...which would also help him to retire earlier and never have to worry about money again. Didn't Cayton say he gave a Tyson a complete account of every penny he made when there was an issue and King and Robin were making him question what was going on?? With King, Tyson was allowed to spend spend spend. Keep him happy and not thinking about who is taking. King did this when Tyson got out of prison as well. Cayton and Jacobs was getting a decent percentage. However, they all flipped the bill for Tyson all the way through since Tyson was a teen. In addition; Tyson was making millions in and outside the ring with them. And, he got receipts. At least that's what's been said. So much has been said though. Hard to figure out what is what and what figures are truth. However; Either way, Mike was rich with Cayton/Jacobs. He was earning millions alone outside the ring. Something he didn't do with King because King made him go from the Hero/Respected, to the Ghetto Champ who relied more on being a bully and fear. King was more corrupt. Even Larry Holmes knew that. ........................................
Well, Cayton definitely had Tyson's best interests, but I read that a certain percentage of Tyson's purse was going to Cayton's wife and Jacobs' wife. Something along those lines. And Tyson didn't have a problem with it until Robin found out. Cayton had some sort of savings account set up for Tyson in the future that accumulated a great amount of money. I remember reading about the Givens' trying to take money out of one of the accounts and getting denied, then going ape**** and threatening the bankers. THis was happening right before the divorce. I think it was King who told Tyson to freeze the account so they couldn't touch his money. It's been a while since I read the Tyson books so I might be off a little bit.
Very good. Holyfield took more advantage of the Holyheadbutt in the second fight because he knew that he could probably get away with anything in the ring against Mike at that time. Tyson was the bully that many fans and non-fans of the sport wanted to see get his ass kicked. Mike was a mess at that time. His house was a circus as was his training camp. He was in no real shape mentally to deal with an Evander who wanted to prove to everyone that he could take his punch and hit him back. Holyfield would have beat the Douglas version of Tyson, but not the 80's version. When the talk of a fight happened before the Desiree Washington crap, that Tyson physically would have been too much for Evander. Don't know if Holyfield as a fighter at the time could have got into Tyson's head and get him off his game with all the stuff going on in his life. It's too bad that Mike and Teddy Atlas could put their **** behind them and regroup. I can totally understand why Tyson wouldn't reach out to him again even though he was said at one time to be seriously considering going back with Atlas. I would still have nightmares about a guy putting a gun to my head too. That's the true story of what Atlas did to Tyson when he got too close to his daughter. Tyson had heart and the body, but he wasn't totally committed to the sport in his second reign and after like he was when Cus was alive. Him dying took alot out of Mike and he never really set his life straight after that. Too many people wanted a piece of his money or some control of his life. Dealing with all of that garbage and taking it to the ring for a fight isn't productive for any fighter regardless of the talent he had.
