It's a good point, and I agree that the key to beating Pavlik is to take away the jab. But if were talking about workrate and jabbing, Winky Wright was no less than Pavlik in either area, and has the better jab. His jab and his workrate were pretty much nonexistant against Hopkins. Bernard is very subtle in the ring, he knows the ins and outs of practically everything, and he certainly knows how to take away Pavlik's jab and workrate, it's just a matter of can he do what he knows how to do at this age. If Hopkins lowers KP's workrate, like he did to both Wright's and Calzaghe's, his stamina will be less of an issue. For me, the issue in this fight is just how far past it is Hopkins. Prime Hopkins outclasses Pavlik IMO, not any disrespect to Pavlik, but I doubt he could do much against peak Hopkins. I'd see it going similar to Hopkins-Trinidad with Pavlik lasting the distance. It all depends on how faded he is as far as I'm concerned.
I don't think Cal landed a single jab against Hopkins in the first round, but it did start to connect later. Staying away from Kelly's jab will be hard work. Every punch he doesn't slip will hurt. Kelly has been boxing since age 9 so he has been fighting as many years as Bhop has. AMs may be different but it is experience. Kelly isn't slow and plodding. He is economy of motion. Many still don't realize how many punches he picks off with his gloves. Plus he takes punches at the end range. People talk about how much he gets hit, but he says he got careless and Lockett tagged him ONCE. That is how he sees it anyhow.
Wow, 40 voted Yes. My pick is of course NO, Calzaghe is far more skilled than Pavlik and will be able to land far more yet he still couldn't come close to stopping or even hurting Hopkins. I know that Pavlik hits way harder and fought at Light Heavy before but this is Hopkins we're talking about, if he could figure out the likes of DLH, Trinidad, Tarver, Wright and give Calzaghe a hell out of a fight even when he lost then I don't see why the very predictable Pavlik should be a problem. He can only be a problem if he's affective with his aggression and lands a lot, something WAY easier said than done against someone like Hopkins.
Here's where I think you and I, as well as others, go our seperate ways on this fight: 1) Landing flush on Hopkins enough to hurt him is no easy task. 2) Stopping Pavlik from doing his thing is no easy task either. No one calls him slow and easy to hit AFTER they fight him.
