A 38 year old Holmes was frustrating prime Tyson until he got KFTO

A faded Larry Holmes is Tyson's best win.

 

Holmes had no moments other than dancing around the ring and popping his jab for about 60 seconds.

Four years later an "older" and "fatter" Holmes would defeat undefeated Ray Mercer and give Holyfield a tougher fight.

Tyson when he was considered prime by the nuthuggers was a terrible time in heavyweight division. There was no one, just a bunch of journeymen, B level fighters, retired old men and cab drivers. Once the division started getting some talent Tyson became what he always had been, a good top ten fighter but nowhere near the level of a champion.

I do realize that no fighter in history could destroy is spectacular fashion journeymen like Mike did, but that is not enough to be considered an ATG. When he fought the great fighters of his day he lost every time.

 

Yeah, and he was snapping Mike's head back for those 60 seconds too. Four years later, Larry Holmes was again an active fighter not just coming off a two year retirement.

 

Glad to see you agree with me. Yes 60 seconds of jabs that frustrated tyson, and yes once he got in halfway decent shape he was a bit better.

The fact he was in training and fought a 15 round exhibition fight prior to the Tyson fight was meaningless too?

I figured you would know that since you grew up in the 80's?

 

Oh...he fought an exhibition bout? Well, that just changes everything...no wonder he was able to frustrate Tyson.:-(

 

The point is that he wasnt as inactive as he leads on after the fact. Tompkins made mention of it in a post Tyson fight interview to which Holmes agreed he was sharp and ready.

Holmes was embarrassed and dominated for the first time in his career. If you call 60 seconds of Tyson shaking his head and chasing Holmes because Larry was running, frustrating him, you have a lot to learn.

Tyson dominated and knocked out Holmes, there was no bright spot in Holmes performance other than him getting up and trying to fight back.

Holmes was scared, running and landing nothing of significance. I think he thought he might be able to settle into his rhythm and keep Mike at bay, but it was never going to happen. It wasn't impressive.

 

Holmes was 38, out of shape, and pretty intimidated tbh. Tyson was in his physical and mental prime. Anyone saying their fight is a blueprint for what a prime Holmes would have done with Tyson is just ****ing ******ed.
