this is about the principle. Who the fighters involved are shouldn't affect that.

than your poll is invalid, as it leaves too much room for debate, and not enough givens

    The bigger fighter's natural weight.

Conn is a badass because he moved up to HW to face Louis. Had he made Joe try to boil 30 lbs, or even 15, it would have dimmed his legend.

Had Roy Jones Jr. insisted by contract that Ruiz weigh in at say 201.5 lbs, his achievement wouldn't be nearly as laudable.

    et cetera.

You don't get any pats on the back or extra brownie points for facing bigger men if you drain them. A real giant killer tells his giants to come as they are.

David Haye is smaller than Valuev, i didnt see him ask for a catch weight for the heavyweight title.

Shouldn't the bigger guy earn his pats on the back as well? You are approcihng this as if its always the smaller guy trying to prove himself against a bigger guy, not just two fighters trying to get it on.

Example: if Floyd had drained down to 140 and beat JMM in the same manner, it would have enhanced his legend more than fighting him at 147, correct?

depends on whos the bigger draw and who can dictate negotiations...if pac for example were to tell yuri to fight, he would have the right to tell him when, where, and at what weight...if the bigger guy is the star calling out a smaller fighter of an equal caliber, i think it is right that they meet somewhere in between to make it an even playing field.

Lets say forget who is the star and who isn't. What weight should they fight at so that they are on a level playing field?

catchweight...however say for instance if its a case of fighter A being the man at a division, and he moves up one division to find some fights, and a smaller guy, fighter B, moves up one division and dominates whoever the #2 guy was in the division when fighter A left, i feel as though it wouldnt be too much to ask fighter A to move back down if he hadnt vacated the weight class too long ago...and vice versa

I think it depends on who calls who out.. if I'm small and I call someone bigger than me out to fight I need to be ready to fight a bigger man so I need to put on a few pounds.. and the same goes for a bigger man calling a smaller man out.. he needs to lose a few pounds!

Conceptually, here's how I feel, though there would be legitimate exceptions in actual practice:

    - If the better fighter is the bigger fighter, then the bigger fighter should have to come down and meet at the lowest reasonable catchweight
    - If the better fighter is the smaller fighter, he should move up and let the lesser fighter fight at his natural weight
    - If they're about the same, then meet at a catchweight that's a little lower than the heavier's fighter normal weight, but still within his comfort zone.

If Pacquiao wants to move up and fight the likes of Cotto and Clottey, fight them at their real weight-class. If he's not prepared to, then look aswell. It's a straight up ***** move asking natural 147's to drop down in weight just so he can fight more-drained, less-than-100% version's of each. Like Rooney said, Haye didn't ask Valuev to come in at a catchweight. It's bull****.
