Every fighter has some dirt on his record.. in some cases it's conceiled because not many people know about it. Everyone knows about Ali & Cooper, Marciano & LaStarza I, Holyfield & Cooper, etc. Who has seen Bowe vs Tubbs? Many people believed Tubbs should've won, how did you score it? Did you think Bowe would be "exposed" as soon as he stepped up, considering Tubbs was past his best and overweight as always, or a stylistic/off night kind of case?

If I remember right, I scored the fight for Tubbs with 5-4 (1 round even) or so. I think he had a bad style for Riddick and Bowe showed also a very lazy performance...

Tubbs was up for it and caught Bowe off guard, which was Riddick's fault. It was close no doubt, but it was not a robbery IMO, there was a case for a Bowe win.

I think I had it for Tubbs, but there was a lot of close rounds that could of gone either way.

I saw the fight and scored it 6-4 for Bowe. My thoughts were Tubbs was a quick handed and cagey fighter, who gave an up and comming Bowe some issues.

Yup, I've got a copy of the fight.

I didn't think Bowe would get 'exposed' by Tubbs, because Tubbs could be so erratic sometimes that I couldn't rely on him. As it turned out, Tubbs brought his 'A' game and Bowe's usual commitment to going for a knockout left him looking a bit puzzled when the slippery Tubbs was able keep getting out of trouble.

Bowe's stuff looked more eye-catching, whenever he was able to get Tubbs against the ropes he would blast away with looping hooks and uppercuts. The problem was that so often Tubbs would be keeping just out of range, catching Bowe again and again with quick jabs and hooks on the way in then moving aside. So it made for an interesting clash of styles.

I last saw the fight about two years ago. I have my scorecard from that time :

    1 Bowe
    2 Tubbs
    3 Bowe
    4 Tubbs
    5 Bowe
    6 Bowe
    7 Tubbs
    8 Tubbs
    9 Bowe
    10 Tubbs

...so I actually thought it should've been a draw. Might be interesting to watch it again sometime.

The worst thing with my copy is that the commentators seem utterly interested in what Tubbs is doing and already have "Bowe wins" mentally noted down. Tubbs would narrowly avoid a jab and land his own and the commentators would be going "jab by Bowe there", and generally only paying attention when Bowe was able to get off big salvos when Tubbs was against the ropes.

They seemed a bit surprised to hear the close scores and even more when the crowd started booing the result!

I think I had it either 6-4 or 5-4-1 for Tubbs.

I'd like to watch this again. I think I've still got it on tape, not sure. Tubbs was jobbed no doubts there. He presented the big lummox with some nice fast combinations and different angles. It was a good learning curve if anything for Bowe.

I think Tubbs was a risky fight for a young prospect like Bowe.
Tubbs was always a very good boxer.
I dont believe Tubbs was necessarily past his best. In fact he performed as well as I can remember, certainly better than his WBA titles defence against Witherspoon five years earlier.

It's a bit unfair to be over-critical of Bowe, as it wasn't an easy fight to take.

I remember a return match being proposed soon after Bowe won the title, but for some reason it never materialised.

I've seen the fight a few times before (haven't got a copy) but it was definitely one of Tubbs best post 80's performances: I think I just gave Bowe the benefit of the doubt, by a single round (with one or two rounds even) last time I saw it, but would be curious to watch it again. Tubbs ran him real close for sure, you could argue he was maybe hard done by not getting the verdict himself. A tricky one to score.

I saw it live and have it on tape somewhere. I agree wtih Mendoza. It's hard to take jell-o seriously and even harder to punch at jell-o when it's slippery and sweaty. Tubbs was nothing if not cagey.

I saw the fight as fairly even, very awkward one to score , but it was definitely not all one way for the young Bowe.

I had the Bowe v Biggs fight a great test for the young Bowe..

It was the last time i saw Biggs look competetive..

This was a very tough fight to score, and I actually had Tony Tubbs pulling this one out. However, I didn't mind that Bowe got the verdict, have to re-watch again, very close fight.

Bowe was exposed when he was supposed to step up - By throwing a belt in the garbage rather than fight - If thats not being exposed I dont know what is!!!
