had it turned into a brawl like the war. how long does duran survive? his chin being better than hearns and his brawling/inside fighting qualities would give hagler a few more problems. but of course his punching power doesnt equal the hitmans, even that didnt deter the will of hagler.
Duran came in prepared with strategy for exactly that. Hagler did the same and that is why it became chess. Duran was set to counter the hell out of Hagler and you could see him having -some- success with it when Hagler opened up. Hagler was so conservative early that Duran couldn't do what he was planning to do -catch him coming in and then pivoting out and around him. Hagler did open up later but Duran was badly tiring. And that's the key. Hagler was just too physically strong and heavy for Duran. Had Hagler fought a physical, grueling fight, Duran would have worn-out a lot earlier and the chance of a TKO/fatigue stoppage aren't remote. Duran may have been stopped as early as round 9 or 10. Though not KOd like Hearns. No way. Duran saw everything Hagler threw. Duran's only chance was to either outbox him or if Hagler got mean, to damage Hagler's eye and exploit the handicap. I think those two things were on his mind. I find it interesting that he managed to damage an eye late... after Hagler turned on the aggression ...but it was too little too late.
I think a more aggressive Hagler who looks to use educated pressure, working in combination with a sustained bodyattack could break Duran down. Duran's defence and counters kept Hagler honest, but maybe he could have grabbed the bull by it's horns and fought an aggressive fight
Hagler would have stopped Duran in about 5 rounds had he been aggressive. He didn't have Hearns power to stop Roberto in 2, but he was physically too strong for Roberto.
I have to disagree with that thought. i think Hagler had more power at mw then Hearns at mw. Honestly it could've gone several different routes. Maybe Duran easily counters an over aggressive Hagler or Hagler could've walk through Duran. I don't think haggler would have knocked Duran out in a Hearns fashion but perhaps in the middle to late rounds broke him down. If Hagler came out swinging like the war its hard to say what would happen. Would Duran stick to his game plan or slug it with Marvin? if he slugs i see a similar ending as the war with Hearns.
^^^ as far the right hand goes i can agree Hearns had one all time best rights. but i think punch for punch Hagler has the edge. Not trying to **** on Hearns he is one of my favorite fighters and on my top 10 p4p.
Simply have a look at their punching impact on common opponents Hearns and Roldan. Different worlds. Duran was quite disparaging post fight in his comments per Haglers power, but he was pretty quiet about Hearns :!:
i'm going to take a look at hearns and hagler fights in a different light now that you mention it to see who has that crispier power punch for punch. To be completely honest when i used to fight, out of the fabulous 4, if i had to pick one fighter to emulate it would be hearns. very diverse fighter but i always figured hagler was the hardest hitting of the four. ill make sure I'm not confusing punching power with all around strength.
Evidently Hearns, who punched at the top level right up to 175, hit harder than Hagler at 160. Ridiculous to say otherwise.
what it came down to for Hagler- Hearns was chin which was undisputedly one of Marvins strong points. back to the original post though. i have to say the Duran of higher weights classes just wasn't as good as his crusade at lw. Hagler wins by KO as Duran didn't seem to have his mind on truing and conditioning enough to keep up with hagler at that specific time. like you all said Hearns was a harder puncher yet still fell because fighting at pace someones going down early and if a Hearns right couldn't stop Hagler i don't think Duran would hurt him the only possible way Duran could win is by boxing which wouldn't be the case in a brawl
Hagler was a physically strong middleweight and stronger at middleweight physically than Hearns, but Hearns punched harder as Roldan and Leonard and Duran and most guys who fought both of them said. I do agree Hagler would stop Duran around 5 or 6..
