Gene Fullmer Vs Benny Paret I don't know if I've ever seen a fighter beaten so badly, and respond so valiantly - Watching this fight made me a little queasy. I don't see it discussed an awful lot though, surely this has to be one of the most brutal contests ever? Fullmer says he has NEVER beaten a man as badly as he beat Paret that night. He never felt right again after this fight, and it could've been a big reason why he ended up dead after the Griffith matchup.
yeah it was brutal. The ref was a little slow on the gun there. Fullmer just pounded him pretty badly. You can even see the damage on that black and white footage, which is pretty rare.
I had heard about this fight for many years before I actually saw it on ESPNClassic, and I must say, that it was FAR more brutal than I ever thought it was. Paret had no business getting in the ring with Fullmer, and no business at all taking that horrible beating of the last two rounds or so. It was like a back alley brawl in that there was no one looking out for Paret. Not the referee or that stupid, macho corner of his. Fullmer really killed him, not Griffith.
Come on, dont go blaming Paret's death on Gene. It was Goldstine's fault. He should have jump in sooner, he let Emile landed 15 on the ropes and out cold.
